Patiala, March 18
Gurindervir Singh surprised everyone with his electrifying speed when he breasted the tape in 10.35 seconds to win the 100m gold at the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship. The 18-year-old thus won the title of the fastest athlete of the tournament.
Gurindervir, who trains at Khalsa College in Jalandhar, also improved on his personal best of 10.47s on way to winning the gold here. The reigning 100m national champion in the U-20 category is inching closer to the national record of 10.26s, set by Amiya Kumar Mallick in 2016.
Gurindervir, who hails from Patial village near Bhogpur town in Jalandhar district, said: “I hope that in the coming days, I will be able to break the national record.”
Avinash Sable, 25, smashed the national record in the 3,000m men’s steeplechase competition. Sable stopped the clock in 8m 28.94s to improve on his own national record of 8:29.80 that he had recorded just six months ago in Bhubaneswar. Sable’s effort was enough to secure him a berth for the Asian Championships, for which the qualifying mark is 8:35.00. He also qualified for the World Championships for which the qualification standard was set 8:29.00.
Injured Hima fails to qualify
Hima Das won gold in the women’s 400m in 52.88s but could not qualify for the Asian Championships. “I am having a back injury,” she said.
