Vikas Kandola’s early raiding brilliance ensured Haryana Steelers thrashed Season 6 runners-up Gujarat Fortunegiants 41-24 in a Pro Kabaddi League encounter here today. Vikas (8 points), Prashanth Kumar Rai (8 points) and Ravi Kumar (6 tackle points) led an all-round performance from the Steelers that saw the side jump to third place in the Season 7 points table.

Wassan chairman of DDCA selection committee

Former India fast bowler Atul Wassan was today appointed as the chairman of the senior selection committee of the DDCA for the 2019-20 season. The other two members of the panel are Anil Bharadwaj and Vineet Jain. The DDCA also formed a three-member junior selection committee which will be headed by Mayank Tehlan and has Chetan Sharma and Pradeep Chawla as members.

Paul replaces Cummins in Windies squad for 2nd Test 

All-rounder Keemo Paul has replaced fast bowler Miguel Cummins in West Indies’ 13-member squad for the second Test against India, starting on Friday. Paul, who missed the first Test due to an ankle injury, is now available for selection.

Ajantha Mendis retires from all forms of cricket 

Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis today announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The 34-year old, who made his debut for Sri Lanka in 2008 and last played international cricket in 2015, took 288 wickets for his country across the three formats. Famous for his “carrom ball”, Mendis snapped 70 wickets in 19 Tests, 152 in 87 ODIs and 66 in 39 T20Is, but he couldn’t prolong his career due to injuries and loss of form. Mendis had become the fastest bowler to reach 50 ODI wickets and is the only bowler to take a six-wicket haul in T20Is twice.

Sisodia grabs lead after shooting 67 in second round 

Shivendra Singh Sisodia, playing at his home course, came up with a 5-under 67 in the second round to grab the lead at 6-under 138 in the fourth leg of the PGTI Feeder Tour here today. Karan Pratap Singh, who also hails from Gurugram, produced a 68 to be placed second at 5-under 139. Kapurthala's Ashbeer Saini (69) and Greater Noida's Arjun Sharma (68) occupied joint third place at 4-under 140.

Tvesa opens with 4-under in 13th Leg of WPGT 

Tvesa Malik got off to a flying start in the 13th leg of the Women's Pro Golf Tour with a 4-under 68 that gave her a four-shot lead over Gaurika Bishnoi and Gurjot Badwal. Tvesa started the day with 10 pars in a row, before coming up with three successive birdies. She dropped a shot on the par-5 15th, but quickly regrouped herself to close birdie-birdie for a 68. Diksha Dagar and Vani Kapoor, along with three other golfers, were tied-fourth at 73.

Bhullar, Chawrasia set to tee off at European Masters 

Indian golfers Gaganjeet Bhullar and SSP Chawrasia will look to find their best form this week when they tee off at the Omega European Masters at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland tomorrow. Bhullar ended his challenge at T-53 in the Scandinavian Masters, which was played last week, and will look for a fresh start. Chawrasia had missed the cut at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open last month. Agencies

Vismaya wins gold at Josef Seckár Memorial 

Indian sprinter V K Vismaya produced a personal best timing of 52.12s to clinch the gold medal in the women 400m run at the International Athletic Meeting -- Josef Seckár Memorial (MJS) in Brno, Czech Republic. The 22-year-old Indian won the yellow metal, while compatriots Poovamma Machettira and Subha Venkatesan finished second and third with timings of 53.47s and Sudha 53.67s respectively.

FC Bury expelled from Football League 

Bury, one of the oldest clubs in English soccer, has been expelled from the Football League after 125 years of membership following its failure to find a new owner. The club from Greater Manchester had until Tuesday to provide evidence to the English Football League that it could meet its financial commitments, but was unable to after a takeover bid collapsed. League One will now comprise 23 teams for the remainder of the season and the number of relegation places will be reduced to three instead of four.

Real Madrid’s injury worries have continued at the start of the Liga season with midfielder Isco suffering a hamstring injury. The 27-year-old Spain international, who has featured in both of Real’s games so far, joins a growing injury list at the Santiago Bernabeu just two weeks into the new campaign.

Sanchez in Milan ahead of expected Inter loan

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez arrived in Italy ahead of an expected loan move to Inter Milan. Italian media published photos and videos of at Malpensa airport and said he would undergo a medical. He will be reunited with his Manchester United teammate Romelu Lukaku who joined Inter this month. Sanchez previously spent three seasons in Serie A with Udinese before moving to Barcelona.

Dortmund’s Hazard out of action for ‘several weeks’ 

Thorgan Hazard will be out of action for several weeks after picking up a rib injury in the Bundesliga, his club Borussia Dortmund announced. He will probably miss Dortmund’s next two Bundesliga matches against Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen and also Belgium’s two Euro qualifiers against San Marino and Scotland.  AGENCIES
