Punjab’s Kunwer bags javelin gold

PUNE:Punjab’s Kunwer Ajai Raj Singh Rana won a gold medal in javelin throw in the Khelo India Youth Games here today.

Punjab’s Kunwer Ajai Raj Singh Rana won a gold medal in javelin throw in the Khelo India Youth Games here today. He hurled the javelin to 75.40m to clinch the gold in the U-17 category. The thrower, who trains at the Punjab Institute of Sports, had finished sixth at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.  Tamil Nadu’s Karuniya Muthuramalingam won a discuss gold in the U-21 category, beating Punjab’s Arpandeep Kaur Bajwa (Punjab) Haryana’s Seema to the second and third place, respectively.  Meanwhile, Haryana underlined their supremacy on the wrestling mat, winning all seven gold medals in the girls’ under-17 weight category.  In hockey, Punjab and Haryana, along with Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, entered the semifinals in the U-17 category.

In weightlifting, all eyes were on Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga, and he duly took the gold in the U-17 event. 

At the end of Day 2, hosts Maharashtra were on top of the table with 15 gold medals, followed by Delhi at second spot with 13 gold and Haryana at third with 12. — PTI
