Palembang: India’s singles specialists, including second seed Ramkumar Ramanathan and Ankita Raina, progressed to the pre-quarterfinals of the tennis event. Ramanathan beat Wong Hong Kit 6-0 7-6 (4). Prajnesh Gunneswaran beat Rifqi M Fitriadi 6-2 6-0. Ankita beat Beatrice Gumulya 6-2 6-4, while Karman Kaur Thandi beat Jargal Altansarnai 6-1 6-0. In men’s doubles, Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal defeated Abhishek Batola and Samrakshy Bajracharya 6-1 6-1. Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan beat Ignatius Anthony Susanto and David Agung Susanto 6-3 6-3.
Hockey: Men maul Indonesia 17-0
Jakarta: The Indian men’s hockey team hammered Indonesia 17-0 in its opener. Dilpreet Singh (6th, 29th, 32nd), Simranjeet Singh (13th, 38th, 53rd) and Mandeep Singh (29th, 44th, 49th) scored hat-tricks, while Rupinder Pal Singh (1st, 2nd), Akashdeep Singh (10th, 44th), SV Sunil (25th), Vivek Sagar (26th), Harmanpreet Singh (31st) and Amit Rohidas (54th) were the other scorers.
India assured of first medal in sepak takraw
Palembang: India assured itself of a maiden Asian Games medal in sepak takraw by progressing to the semifinals. The men’s tem defeated Iran 21-16 19-21 21- 17. They lost to Indonesia later but advanced to the semis to be guaranteed of at least a bronze. India next face defending champs Thailand.
Wushu: Narender wins
Jakarta: Narender Grewal, the 2014 bronze medallist, progressed to the men’s sanda quarterfinals. Besides Narender, Surya Bhanu Partap Singh and Santosh Kumar also registered wins. In the men’s 70kg sanda, Pardeep Kumar registered a win to reach the quarterfinals.
Badminton: Indian teams lose
India’s hopes of winning a medal in badminton team events went up in smoke after both the men’s and women’s sides bowed out of the competition following identical 1-3 losses in the quarterfinals. While the women lost to Japan, the men lost to Indonesia.
Rowing: Dushyant in final
Palembang: Dushyant Chauhan, in single sculls, and the Indian men’s quadruple sculls team finished first in their respective heats to reach the finals of the rowing competition. In the men’s lightweight double sculls and lightweight eight, Indian teams made it to the repechage rounds. — PTI
