Muscat: Defending champions India started their men’s junior Asia Cup campaign on a rousing note, thrashing lowly Thailand 11-0 in a lop-sided Pool A match. Araijeet Singh Hundal (2nd minute, 24th), Arshdeep Singh (8th), Gurjot Singh (18th, 45th), Sourabh Kushwaha (19th, 52nd), Dilraj Singh (21st) and Mukesh Toppo (59th) struck from field play for India, while Sharda Nand Tiwari (10th) found the net from a penalty corner. Rohit (29th) converted a penalty stroke for the winners. India will take on Japan on Thursday.

Uma replaces injured Yastika for women’s ODIs in Australia

Uma Chetry has replaced top-order batter Yastika Bhatia in India’s squad for the three women’s ODIs against Australia next month. Bhatia injured her wrist in the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League Down Under. Chetry has played four T20Is, while Bhatia is more experienced having featured in three Tests, 28 ODIs and 19 T20s. India will play the first two ODIs in Brisbane on December 5 and December 8. The third ODI is in Perth on December 11.

SA 80/4 against Sri Lanka after rain-affected first day

South Africa have closed a rain-affected first day against Sri Lanka on 80/4 after no play was possible after lunch in the first Test. Lahiru Kumara took 2/35 as the visitors used the seamer friendly conditions to dismiss the South African top order. Home captain Temba Bavuma (28 not out) and Kyle Verreynne (9 not out) will resume on Thursday, with the weather forecast for the next few days good.

Thiago Messi, the eldest son of the Argentina star, has made his debut in the “Newell’s Cup” tournament in the countryside city of Rosario. The 12-year-old Messi played with the No. 10 jersey of an Inter Miami youth team, which lost 1-0 to hosts Newell’s Old Boys.
