Hosts' hopes took a big hit on Day two of the Yonex Sunrise India Open 2025 as many of the prominent singles players bowed out of the competition. Lakshay Sen, HS Prannoy, Priyanshu Rajawat, Aakarshi Kashyap and Malvika Bansod all were ousted

Sen, who wanted to go deep in this tournament after a first round exit at the Malaysian Open last week, had another forgetful outing. On Wednesday, Sen, who missed winning a medal at the Paris Olympics, slumped to a 21-15, 21-10 loss against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-yi

Sen’s loss came after another Indian star HS Prannoy failed to advance in the Round of 16. Prannoy, despite winning the opening game 21-16, failed to carry the momentum eventually losing 18-21, 12-21 to Su Li Yang.

Post the loss, Prannoy said he has been bothered illness and injuries since the Olympics

“The last few months were tough. Things are getting better and I can see improvement in my game. I think it is going to be tough for me to play at a high level without breaks,” Prannoy said.

“Malaysia was a decent outing, but I had a few niggles which made it tough today. But I am happy to be back on the circuit. Today I was sluggish, but overall, I am happy with the way I played,” he added.

Earlier, young shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat defied all odds and took the sixth seeded Kodai Naraoka of Japan into three sets. After taking the opening game 21-16, Priyanshu who was a member of the 2022 Thomas Cup win, lost the next two 20-22, 21-13

Rajawat’s strokeplay and his jump smashes had Naraoka in all sorts of problems and he was made to work hard for every point. But in the end, the experience showed and despite Rajawat saving a match point, Naroaka sailed through.

In women’s singles action, only Anupama Upadhyaya who advanced to the next round, She beat Rakshitha Ramraj 21-17, 21-18, however another Indian Aakarshi Kashyap lost 17-21, 13-21 to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Malvika Bansod lost a close contest against China’s Han Yue. The Indian won the first game but Han Yue, who is the third seed won the two to win 20-22, 21-16, 21-11.

Also advancing were the seventh-seeded women’s doubles combination of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto after they beat Kavya Gupta and Radhika Sharma 21-11, 21-12.
