Students take out rally against CAA, NRC in city

Amid loud slogans of ‘Samvidhan Bachao’, members of the Punjab Student Union (PSU) and the Naujawan Bharat Sabha (NBS) took out a rally in the city to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall here today.

They also submitted a memorandum to the SDM-1 of the district to be forwarded to the President, demanding withdrawal of these laws.

Addressing the gathering, PSU state leader Mangaljit Pandauri and Naujawan Bharat Sabha leader Jaskaran Azaad said the protest was being held across the country against the CAA, NRC and NPR. “People from all walks of life are raising their voice against this unconstitutional law and over 12 people have been killed by the police during demonstration

in UP,” they said.

They added that BJP ministers were threatening to kill those who speak against Narendra Modi and Amit Shah and the dictatorial attitude of Shah to enforce these laws was further destroying the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

Pandauri said the country’s economy was going down each day, unemployment was all-time high and inflation was also increasing. However, these issues fail to bother the Central Government.

“First demonetisation, then the GST shook the economy. Factories across the country are on the verge of closure, while the Centre is adamant in bringing the CAA and the NRC,” he added.

The members said the government was dividing the country under a fascist conspiracy. “Minorities, especially Muslims, are being targeted. Attacks on students in the JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University were proof of government tactics to suppress the protests,” they said.

PSU’s district president Varjit Kaur said the CAA, NRC and NPR would not only affect Muslims but would also have a severe impact on the lives of every citizen and they would be forced to stand in long queues again, like during demonetisation.
