The Threatened Split — a Suggestion.

A split in the Congress, especially at the present time, would be so terrible a catastrophe that the mere possibility of it is calculated to destroy the peace by day and the sleep by night of all who love their country.  We know, indeed, of men who during the last week or so have been thinking of nothing else. For our part we have talked the matter over with everyone we have come across, and we have not met a single individual who does not share our feeling regarding the impending disaster. The same must be the experience of others both here and in other Provinces. Yet the situation is such and things have gone to such an extreme that it is difficult to lay one’s finger with assurance upon any practicable remedy.
