In the recently concluded Assembly elections in Assam, the BJP won 82 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad won 10 seats each. This marks the NDA’s third consecutive victory in Assam.

Sarma was first elected to the state Assembly in 2001. He served as a minister during all three terms of former Congress Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi between 2001 and 2016. In 2015, Sarma and several other Congress legislators joined the BJP. A year later, the BJP formed its first government in Assam.

Samra met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and staked claim to form the next government.

“The 2021-26 BJP rule was just a trailer. 2026-31 will unveil the full picture. Get ready for NDA 3.0 — in service from May 12, 2026. We will be at the forefront of pro-people governance and facilitating legislation that shall unleash the full potential of Assam,” Sarma stated on X.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said preparations were underway for the swearing-in ceremony on May 12, which he described as a “historic moment”. He said the Chief Minister was expected to take oath along with 102 MLAs in the presence of PM Modi, who would attend the event as the chief guest.
