To mark the 135th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited Adampur on Tuesday, where he rolled out the Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana under which Rs 1,000 will be given to women from the general category and Rs 1,500 to those belonging to the SC category in the state every month.

As part of the launch, three women beneficiaries were presented with certificates of enrolment under the scheme. The Aam Aadmi Party chose to launch the scheme from Adampur as it is a reserved Assembly segment. The CM had visited Adampur last month after the announcement of the scheme in the Budget session and had interacted with SC women. The party had planned to execute the scheme today to make it coincide with the Ambedkar Jayanti state-level function.

A large crowd, a majority of them women, was present on the occasion and danced and swayed during the rally.

Taking a swipe at opposition parties, Mann cautioned people against falling prey to false allurements. He said parties often tried to woo voters through deceptive schemes.

Addressing the gathering, Mann encouraged women to step into active politics and become aware of “who genuinely works for the people and who misleads them”.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also announced that the Industrial Training Institute at Adampur would be renamed after Ambedkar. He sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the upgrade of the institute, including renovation of the building.

The CM said, “The Akalis bruised the psyche of every Punjabi through the heinous crime of beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib during their tenure. The perpetrators of this unpardonable crime evaded punishment due to lack of intent on the part of the Congress and the Akalis. Now, we have passed the historic Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, stipulating harsher punishment for beadbi.”
