The controversy around the song “Tateeree” by rapper Badshah mainly revolves around the meaning of its lyrics and the way they are presented in the music video, which many people in Haryana believe are vulgar and inappropriate.

The word “Tateeree” itself comes from the Haryanvi language and refers to the grey francolin, a bird commonly found in rural parts of North India.

In folk culture, the name of the bird is sometimes used metaphorically in songs to describe a lively or attractive girl. However, in modern pop music, the term can also be used with double meanings, which is where the controversy has emerged.

In the song, the lyrics repeatedly refer to a girl as “Tateeree” and use phrases that suggest teasing, flirting, and physical attraction.

Critics say the wording contains suggestive undertones and double-meaning lines that objectify women. While some listeners view the song as typical commercial rap with playful banter, others believe the language crosses the line into sexualised or disrespectful expressions about women.

One of the main reasons the song is being labelled vulgar is not just the lyrics themselves but the context in which they appear in the video. The music video reportedly shows girls dressed in school uniforms dancing to the song in a classroom-like environment named “Badshala”, a stylised version of the word “pathshala,” meaning school.

Critics argue that combining suggestive lyrics with visuals of girls in school uniforms creates an uncomfortable and inappropriate representation.

Many people, including social activists and local residents in Haryana, have argued that such imagery of schoolgirls and trivialises a place associated with education and discipline.

According to the complaint filed with Haryana Police, the visuals and lyrics together may send the wrong message to children and young audiences who watch the video online.

The issue also caught the attention of the Haryana State Commission for Women, whose chairperson Renu Bhatia said the portrayal could promote indecent representation of women. Authorities believe that the song’s language and presentation may fall under provisions of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, which aims to prevent derogatory or sexualized depiction of women in media.

Supporters of the rapper, however, argue that Haryanvi and Punjabi music often uses metaphor, exaggeration, and teasing language, and that the song is being interpreted too strictly. They say similar expressions have been used in regional music for years as part of entertainment culture.

Despite these differing views, the controversy has grown largely because of the combination of suggestive lyrics, school-themed visuals, and the massive reach of the video online. With millions of viewers on platforms like YouTube, critics believe such content can influence public attitudes, especially among younger audiences.

As a result of the backlash, the video has reportedly been taken down from YouTube, and police have started the process for issuing lookout circular against the singer Badshah.
