Kerala’s floating tea tradition: A 72-year-old icon who serves culture in every cup

Every evening at four, a small wooden canoe glides through the backwaters of Kumarakom, carrying 72-year-old Shanthakumari, fondly known as “Chaya Chechi” or the Tea Lady. With her, she brings fresh tea, snacks, and a slice of Kerala’s living tradition.

Operating within Coconut Lagoon, CGH Earth, her venture is regarded as Kerala’s first floating tea service. From her boat, she prepares steaming masala chai daily, offering guests a unique and immersive backwater experience.

Her journey across the waters reflects Kerala’s deep-rooted connection with its waterways, once central to daily life and trade. Today, her presence adds authenticity and charm, turning a simple cup of tea into a cultural moment.

Recognised for her efforts, Shanthakumari was honoured by the Kerala government in 2017. She has also gained widespread love online, with visitors calling it “a perfect place for chai lovers”, “a perfect end to the day”, and even saying, “my next visit will be here only”.

More than a tea seller, she serves heritage, warmth, and stories with every cup.
