Uttarakhand is a calm place, so are the people there, recent instances of unruly behaviour of the tourists have made things difficult for the locals.

Recently, a video has gone viral on X, showing Uttarakhand locals giving two bikers a “taste of their own medicine,” sparking massive debate over “mountain etiquette” and noise pollution in sensitive ecological zones.

The almost 2-min clip shows a group of locals blocking two bikers, from Haryana, who were reportedly riding through mountains roads with modified exhausts.

Such illegal modifications, known for producing explosive, high-decibel sounds, have long been a point of dispute among locals in quiet hill stations.

‘Instant Justice’

Frustrated residents confronted the bikers’ mid-way saying, “you have made our lives a living hell” and questioned whether the riders realised that people actually “reside in the mountains.” Then the group of locals decided to give the bikers a taste of their own medicine. In the viral clip, the riders are seen forced to sit on the ground directly behind their own motorcycles being revved.

Beyond the noise nuisance, regional authorities like the Uttarakhand police have recently announced state-wide crackdowns on such illegal modifications under the Motor Vehicles Act, as they exceed permissible noise levels and can distract other drivers driving on high-altitude roads.

The video has further divided the internet in two as some social media users say, “That’s an offence on so many levels. Not only does it cause noise pollution, it also pollutes the air and ruins the engine.” Another user stated, “This is the right way to teach these troublemakers a lesson. The locals showed both brains and courage.”

While some users raised concerns over citizens taking law into their own hands.
