A video showing a woman tourist from Haryana arguing with police after being stopped for drinking near the Ganga at Phool Chatti on April 6 has ignited a strong public reaction online.

In the footage, the woman was heard claiming that tourists sustain local livelihoods, shouting, “Tumhari rozi roti humse chalti hai.” Her husband eventually intervened, leading her away and preventing further escalation.

Social media users were quick to weigh in, largely criticising her behaviour. One user commented, “Ma’am, your tourist money is welcome, but Ganga isn’t your personal bar stool. Come for peace & spirituality, not to turn a holy riverbank into a Haryana after-party. Respect the vibe or stay home.” Another suggested stricter enforcement, writing, “Strict action should be taken without speaking much to them. Arrest them, take them to the police station and then discuss.”

Authorities reminded the public that Rishikesh’s sacred zones are closely monitored to protect religious and environmental sanctity. The incident has sparked debate about balancing tourism with respect for cultural traditions, with many online voices emphasising that personal freedom should not override local norms at holy sites.
