Employee dies at work after manager denies her sick leave, CEO ‘devastated’
A 30-year-old factory worker in Thailand passed away after her request for sick leave was denied by her supervisor.
The incident took place at an electronics manufacturing plant owned by Delta Electronics Thailand in Samut Prakan province, south of Bangkok.
According to reports by Bangkok Post, May had been receiving treatment for an inflamed large intestine and had initially taken medical leave from September 5 to 9. During this period, she was hospitalised for four days and advised to spend two more days recovering at home.
On September 12, when May requested further sick leave due to her deteriorating health, her manager denied the request and instructed her to return to work. Despite her worsening condition, she reported for duty. However, after only 20 minutes on the factory floor, she collapsed.
May was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery but she succumbed to complications from necrotising enterocolitis.
In response to the incident, Delta Electronics Thailand issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
CEO Victor Cheng said, “At Delta Electronics, our people are the foundation of our success, and we are devastated by this loss. Our priority is to provide unwavering support to the employee’s family at this trying time. Delta Electronics remains committed to transparency and responsibility and will keep all relevant parties informed as more information becomes available.”
