The two-day 65th annual sports and athletics meet of DAV College Amritsar got to a flying start on Saturday with the hoisting of the college flag and release of pigeons and colourful balloons in its sports complex.
The meet was declared open by the Principal, Dr Rajesh Kumar, in the presence of chief guest MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla.
He also inaugurated the newly built Major Dhyan Chand Block. After the inauguration ceremony, Rajesh Kumar extended a warm and healthy welcome to the honorable guests.
An impressive march past was conducted and the ceremony of lighting the mashaal (torch) was performed. The college athletes took an oath to follow the spirit of sportsmanship in sports.
Rajesh Kumar said sports play an integral part in the life of students. Sports along with studies help in building the overall personality of students. Dr BB Yadav, head, department of physical education, said the college was celebrating the 65th annual sports and athletics meet and its purpose was to motivate the students to take part in various sports that would build sportsmanship spirit in them. In this two-day sports function, various sports events like 100m and 200m race, shot put, slow cycling, obstacle race, spoon and potato race, 5000m race, discus throw and 50m skipping race, etc. were organised on the first day. Staff members and guests participated in the musical chair event.
The students took part enthusiastically in all the events. While speaking on the occasion, Aujla said the college’s sports department had been touching new heights under the dynamic leadership of BB Yadav, secretary sports board. Aujla also motivated the students as well as the staff members to work towards the betterment of our environment. He spoke about the importance of waste management and vermi composting.
College Principal Rajesh Kumar and the president of college sports board Darshandeep said the university sports functions give chance to professional athletes to show their skills in various sports.
