Leaving no one behind: The SDGs roadmap to a brighter tomorrow

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a comprehensive global development framework adopted in 2015 by all member states of the United Nations under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They came into force on January 1, 2016 and succeeded the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), expanding both scope and ambition.The SDG framework consists of 17 Goals, 169 targets and 230+ global indicators, designed to address interconnected challenges across economic development, social equity and environmental sustainability. A defining feature is universality — the goals apply equally to developed, developing and least-developed countries and the guiding principle of “Leave No One Behind.” Structure & themesThe SDGs are often grouped under the 5 Ps:• People: Ending poverty and hunger; ensuring health, education, gender equality (Goals 1-5)• Planet: Protecting ecosystems, biodiversity, climate and natural resources (Goals 6, 12-15)• Prosperity: Inclusive growth, employment, innovation and infrastructure (Goals 7-11)• Peace: Justice, rule of law and strong institutions (Goal 16)• Partnership: Global cooperation, finance, technology and capacity-building (Goal 17) Key innovations over MDGs• Integrated approach recognising linkages between goals (e.g. climate action and poverty).• Focus on inequality, governance and institutions.• Emphasis on sustainability, not just development outcomes.• Multi-stakeholder participation, involving governments, private sector, civil society and academia. Implementation & monitoringSDGs are non-binding, relying on national ownership and policy alignment. Progress is reviewed annually at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) through Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). Financing is guided by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, stressing domestic resource mobilisation, international aid and private investment. India & SDGsIn India, SDG coordination is led by NITI Aayog, which monitors progress through the SDG India Index, promoting cooperative and competitive federalism. SDGs are aligned with national schemes such as Ayushman Bharat (SDG 3), Swachh Bharat Mission (SDG 6), PM Awas Yojana (SDG 11) and National Action Plan on Climate Change (SDG 13). Adopted by the United Nations in 2015 under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs comprise 17 interlinked global goals:1. No Poverty – End poverty in all its forms everywhere2. Zero Hunger – End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture3. Quality Education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all5. Gender Equality – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls6. Clean Water and Sanitation – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all7. Affordable and Clean Energy – Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all8. Decent Work and Economic Growth – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation10. Reduced Inequalities – Reduce inequality within and among countries11. Sustainable Cities and Communities – Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable12. Responsible Consumption and Production – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns13. Climate Action – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts14. Life Below Water – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources15. Life on Land – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, forests, and biodiversity16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – Promote peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice, and effective, accountable institutions17. Partnerships for the Goals – Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise global partnerships for sustainable developmentChallengesKey challenges include financing gaps, data limitations, regional disparities, climate change impacts and post-pandemic setbacks.
