UT police took 14 months to book int’l golfer Sujjan Singh

While the UT police make claims of safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring their safety, a former international golfer had to wait for over a year to get a case of domestic violence registered against her husband, Sujjan Singh, an international golfer.

In her complaint, Irina, a seven-time national golf champion, alleged that she faced physical and emotional abuse, and cruelty at the hands of her husband and his family. The FIR reads that she went through harassment for over six years.

Sujjan and Irina had got married in 2010, after which the latter was staying at her in-laws’ house in Sector 5. As per the complaint, Irina and her seven-year-old daughter were driven out of her in-laws’ house in May 2018. Since then, she has been staying at her parental house in Sector 21. According to the complaint, Irina was denied access to her in-laws’ house and was not even allowed to collect her belongings.

She finally lodged a police complaint in November 2018 and waited for the police to take action.

Tired of visiting the police station again and again, Irina approached the local court against the UT police in August last year after the Police Department failed to take necessary action on her complaint.

In December, the police were told to file a status report on the next date of hearing, which is scheduled for January 17.

Sujjan Singh, an international player, started taking the game of golf seriously at the age of 21. Prior to that, he played football and squash in national and state championships. He is also said to be an accomplished drummer, who has recorded eight albums in India with fellow golfer Baaz Mann.

The 39-year-old former Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, student had turned professional in 2005 and joined the Professional Golf Tour of India.
