Drunk UP groom mistakenly garlands bride’s friend, wedding called off
A wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Naughwa Bhagwantpur village took a bizzare turn when the groom, heavily drunk, mistakenly garlanded the bride’s best friend during the ceremony. The bride called off the wedding, followed by a chaotic scene that ended with the groom’s arrest.
The groom, identified as 26-year-old Ravindra Kumar, arrived late at the wedding venue and was seen drinking with his friends before the rituals began. However, the real shock came during the garland-exchanging ceremony when, instead of the bride, he placed the ceremonial garland around her best friend. The confusion escalated further as he took off the garland from her neck and then placed it on a male friend. However, this garlanding of people did not end there and the groom proceeded further to garland an elderly guest.
While the 500-odd guests watched in stunned silence, 21-year-old bride Radha Devi was left humiliated. Losing her patience, she slapped the groom and walked off the stage, calling off the wedding on the spot.
The incident quickly turned into a family feud, with both sides engaging in a heated argument and eventually hurling chairs at each other. The situation was brought under control only after the police intervened and sent back the baaraat.
According to reports in the Times of India, the bride’s brother Omkar Verma revealed that the family had spent over Rs 10 lakh on the wedding. He further alleged that the groom’s family had been unhappy with the dowry gifts. Moreover, they discovered that Kumar was not a farmer, as claimed earlier, but a truck driver.
Following a complaint filed at Kularia police station at 4 am, Kumar was taken into custody. A medical examination confirmed his intoxicated state, and he was booked under the Dowry Act. By morning, the wedding was officially called off.
