City-based yoga expert Radhika Nagrath, as part of International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, delivered a lecture at an event organised by the Consulate of India in Dubai recently.

Representing Patanjali Yogpeeth, she dwelled on scientific and natural aspects of the art of yoga, which is being practised for centuries.

“I spoke on the therapeutic use of yoga in the treatment of lifestyle diseases like blood pressure and diabetes. The main focus was on breathing exercises (pranayama), which help reduce stress at work. Yoga has immense mental, physical and spiritual benefits. It transforms us as we practice it on a regular basis,” said Radhika, who has also penned a book titled “Swami Vivekananda: The Known Philosopher The Unknown Poet” and a book on Mahakumbh 2010.

On the controversy surrounding Surya Namaskar, Radhika said,” The sun is the light provider of the whole universe, so it can’t be confined to a specific religion.” “Yoga is neither a religion nor a philosophy. It’s a healthy way of living. It joins people in a healthy bond, which curbs the ailments as well as negativity spread in society,” she added.

Notably, the Consulate General of India, Dubai, is taking a major initiative in making International Yoga Day a huge success with more than 10,000 participants from 100 countries taking part in yoga programmes and events scheduled for June 21.
