German Development Bank will provide financial assistance of Rs 960 crore for clean drinking water and cleaning of the Ganga a memorandum of which is likely to be signed in December this year.

Experts from Germany will supervise the construction of 15 Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) and their 10 networkings. Modern technology will be used for providing clean drinking water. More cities will be taken up in the second phase of the project.

A team of German Development Bank met Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh in the Secretariat here on Wednesday. The team said the appraisal work at Haridwar and Rishikesh had been completed. The report will be presented to German Development Bank.

Utpal Kumar Singh said  the assistance would boost the state’s effort as it had resolved to clean the Ganga  before the next ‘Kumbh mela’.

He also requested them to aim for the completion of the project by 2020.

KFW South Asia head Karla Burk, Secretary Peyjal Arvind Singh Hyanki, Project Director Namame Gange Raghav Langar and other officials were present in the meeting.
