Haridwar, December 31

A high alert has been sounded at Rajaji Tiger Reserve following inputs of the possibility of hunting of wild animals in the park zone.

To check poaching and any other illegal activity in the Rajaji Tiger Reserve and nearby forest terrain, special patrolling is being done by park security employees.

Elephant-borne squads are also carrying out intense patrolling in dense park forest terrain with trained jumbos. Radha, Rangili and Raja are carrying out patrolling operations in the morning and evening.

Chila range ranger Subash Ghildiyal said as precautionary measure and also taking into account the past year’s records of movement of wild animal and wood tusker during New Year time, additional security had been put into place.

The Chila range in Yamkeshwar block of Pauri Garhwal district, Motichur in Dehradun district and Haridwar range in Haridwar district being quite sensitive, all park and forest employees had been asked to remain alert for the next few days in these two ranges as wild animals’ movement was mostly visible in Chila, Motichur and Haridwar ranges.

Haridwar ranger Dinesh Mohan Uniyal said for the past two days, four squads had been deployed in Harnaul, Ranipur and Khadkhadi and Haridwar sectors for patrolling. They were all set to defeat the evil designs of hunters

Security up at Corbett

Dehradun: Come New Year, revellers start flocking Corbett Tiger Reserve and other wildlife sanctuaries. The wildlife authorities have issued an alert in order to ensure that nobody resorts to misadventure in the reserve during the New Year celebrations.

As part of alertness, patrolling has been increased in the core area of the reserve.

Corbett Tiger Reserve Director Surendra Mehra said in January, the flow of tourists increased substantially as this was also the time of vacation. Owing to an increase in activities, security in the park was also strengthened.

Besides state Forest Department accommodations, over 100 resorts fall in proximity to Jim Corbett National Park.

These resorts continue to be most sought-after destinations for those planning for the New Year celebrations. Every resort owner tries to outdo the other in ensuring that the celebrations at their resort are a gala affair.

Corbett authorities have also to be extra cautious. Often there have been cases in the past when high-intensity lights with blaring music put to use by New Year revellers led to distraction to wildlife and thus wildlife authorities are quick to penalise in such cases.

Corbett, which has more than 200 tigers, stands to be a high-density tiger area and this also increases the vulnerability of tigers to poachers, who are always on the lookout for festive opportunities. — TNS

Alarm against bird poaching

Pithoragarh: The Forest Department has sounded an alert against the poaching of state bird monal, flocks of which were seen in lower valleys of Munsiyari to escape from chilling cold of its higher habitations.

Sources in the Forest Department said in Munsiyari today, “We have alerted our team against the likely poaching as flocks of monal were seen flying at Khalia Top and Betulidhar heights in Munsiyari last evening,” said Lavraj Singh, Range Officer, Munsiyari forest range.

According to the forest officer, the state bird that generally live in habitats at a height of 2,800 to 3,500 m comes down to 2,200 m to escape from chilling cold after a snowfall and in search of food.— OC
