Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of developing winter tourism in Uttarakhand, stating that there should be no “off-season” in the tourism sector. Speaking in the Harshil valley, Modi encouraged the state to focus on winter tourism to ensure year-round economic activity.

Modi highlighted the unique advantage of Uttarakhand’s winter season, saying, “When the whole country is witnessing fog during winters, the Sun Gods are smiling on Uttarakhand. Winters in Uttarakhand present a chance at basking in the sun. What would you call this in Garhwali? You would call it Gham tapo (sun bathing) tourism.” It invited a thunderous applause from the locals gathered to hear him.

The Prime Minister also announced the clearance of two major ropeway projects for the state, including the Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway project, which will reduce the pilgrimage time from nine hours to 30 minutes. Additionally, Modi mentioned that the number of pilgrims visiting Char Dham Yatra has increased from 18 lakh before 2014 to 50 lakh now.

“This year’s budget includes provisions to develop 50 tourist destinations, granting hotels at these locations the status of infrastructure. This initiative will enhance facilities for tourists and promote local employment opportunities,” Modi said.

Modi’s visit to Uttarakhand was part of Winter Tourism Programme, where he flagged off a trek and bike rally at Harsil. The programme aims to promote winter tourism in the state and provide employment opportunities for locals.
