New Tehri/Uttarkashi, August 12

Three women, including a tourist from Uttar Pradesh, were swept away by the strong currents of Ganga and Bhagirathi rivers in separate incidents in Uttarakhand on Monday, police said.

In the first incident, Chameli Devi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, was swept away at Janaki Pul Ghat of the Ganga in Tehri district’s Muni Ki Reti area, Additional Superintendent of Police J R Joshi said.

A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team has launched a search operation in the area, he said.

In the second incident, two women were swept away in the Bhagirathi river, a tributary of the Ganga, when they had gone to fetch water near the Nakuri Shiva temple in Dunda tehsil of Uttarkashi district, police said.

Police and disaster management teams have launched a search operation, Uttarkashi District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht said.

The two women were identified as Rajeshwari Devi (34) and Sonam (20), both residents of Bhatusera village, police said.

'
