The police remained on toes after a student of Chitkara University made a prank call that a rape and suicide took place on the campus on Tuesday night.

Police officials reached the university campus at night. By the break of dawn, a DSP and an SP rank officer reached the university to investigate the matter. In the meantime, rumours about the incident spread on social media, which prompted students to hold a protest against the said incident and boycott the classes.

The police investigation, however, revealed that the call was a prank.

The police said a prank call was made to the police helpline number around 9:30 pm on Tuesday and the caller informed that a girl had allegedly committed suicide after she was raped.

The police said the student who made the prank call had already been traced. “The student confessed that he, along with his friends, played the prank. We have recorded the statements of the student and his parents. They have apologised for the incident,” said Rajpura DSP AS Aulakh.

In a press release, the university stated that no such incident took place on its campus. The student’s parents visited the university and expressed regret over their ward’s mischievous act.

Aulakh said the students’ parents had given in writing that their wards would not repeat the act. “As the students have apologised for their mistakes in writing, we have closed the matter,” the DSP said.
