Marlee Matlin rightly said that “the Earth doesn’t belong to us, we belong to the earth.”

We know that every coin has two sides to it; with technological advancement, man has led us to the age of science but not without interfering with the environment and our ecosystem.

We have already taken too much from nature without replenishing it. For a long time, the pace of scientific progress and our exploitation of resources were reasonable, but it has gone beyond reasonable limits for sometime now, destroying other creatures, flora and fauna, and even human beings.

Humans owe much to Mother Nature from the beginning but today we are using our resources to bring about destruction and devastation, in the process robbing and looting nature’s offerings without concerning ourselves about the losses our wanton conduct on our natural resources.

In pursuit of comforts, we have mindlessly gone for advanced technology and other means necessary for higher production of wealth and availability of devices, providing us with more mental and physical comforts leading to many social and environmental problems.

Many species of flora and fauna have become extinct; natural calamities such as floods and famines have become more common. Our lives have become full of contradictions: one man can’t sleep because he fears theft of his money, and the other because of hunger. According to FAO, the earth loses about 18.7 million acres of forests every year, leading to Ozone-layer depletion and countless other drawbacks to the ecosystem.

The growing lust for luxuries and industrialisation has aggravated the crisis. The chloro flouro carbons (CFCs) are causing depletion of the ozone layer, leading to global warming and eruption of various deadly diseases.

The call of the day is to take small individual steps to save the environment. One of such steps could be the 4Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle and recreate. Green transportation can have lots of advantages if we practice pooling of cars, use of biogas solar and renewable energy. Besides, judicious management of resources can have a great impact.

As is rightly said, one little step in the right direction can be a great leap forward for the mankind. Similarly, even the smallest action positive action can inspire and change the world.
