The city observed Word Cancer Day today. Every year, February 4 is celebrated as World Cancer Day by the medical fraternity.

On this day, Aykai Hospital, near Samrala Chowk, Ludhiana, organised a free camp for cancer patients to mark the day. A large number of patients with various ailments were examined by a team of super-specialist doctors. Special discount on investigations were also given to the patients.

Regular screening, including PAP and HPV tests, help to find abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix at the earliest stage. Screening is not 100 per cent accurate, so women should report symptoms such as unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge and pelvic pain.

Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, Urologist & Transplant Surgeon, addressed the patients and informed them that one in eight men suffer from prostate cancer, and if detected early, it can be cured, otherwise, it is life threatening. He also said obese and hypertension patients were more prone to suffer from kidney cancer and if detected early, kidney could be saved and cancer could be cured. Various advancements in techniques have made surgeries amenable with less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay and thereby, decreased patient cost.

Dr Navpreet Aulakh, Director, Aykai Hospital, announced health packages at affordable cost for needy patients. Many patients availed these services and got PSA screening under these packages.

HPV vaccine can reduce cervical cancer risk: Expert

“Women usually ignore their health issues due to their busy schedule, but sometimes this ignorance creates big problems for their health. One of the most common health problem in women is cervical cancer. It occurs most commonly in women above the age of 30 years.”

Dr Ibha, Senior Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, said: “In India, cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in females. The main cause of cervical cancer is a long-lasting infection of certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV)”, she said.

She further said: “Regular screening, including PAP and HPV tests, help to find abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix at the earliest stage. Screening is not 100 per cent accurate, so women should report symptoms such as unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge and pelvic pain. The second preventive measure is vaccination. HPV vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer.”

Meanwhile, doctors at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, have emphasised the importance to understand cancer, key symptoms and early warning signs and ways to prevent some types of cancers. Dr JS Sekhon, Director Oncology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, said: “Among various diseases that affect humanity, cancer has emerged as a major threat. Today, cancer is among one of the major causes of death globally, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths reported.” Dr Harish Matta, General & Oncology Surgeon, informed about breast cancer, its signs and how to detect at an early stage and effectiveness of surgical management in reducing the risks involved.

Activists vow to fight against cancer

Mandi Ahmedgarh: Office-bearers and activists of various educational, social and medical organisations vowed to associate with a crusade launched by the Rotary International District 3090 against cancer. An oath was taken in response to the call given by enthusiasts led by Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey during a function held at MGMN Senior Secondary School on Tuesday. Dr Ravinder Sharma presided over the function while Medical Officer at Civil Hospital Dr Daman Lata and SHO City Amandeep Kaur were keynote speakers. Speakers said at least four out of 10 cancer cases were preventable by following the universal code on cancer control and prevention procedures. Ideal consumption of traditional and indigenous food ingredients was cited as one of the most efficient mode of protection from almost all fatal diseases, including cancer. OC
