Maldives lawmakers impeach Chief Justice

MALE: Maldives lawmakers on Monday dismissed Chief Justice Ahmed Abdulla Didi and SC judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla — a move the government said was part of an overhaul of the judiciary, but the opposition termed it an attack on courts’ independence.

Maldives lawmakers on Monday dismissed Chief Justice  Ahmed Abdulla Didi and SC judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla — a move the government said was part of an overhaul of the judiciary, but the opposition termed it an attack on courts’ independence. A watchdog had claimed some SC judges had violated the constitution and “usurped the powers of parliament”. — Reuters
