YFC, official come to migrants’ rescue

Days after a news report “Migrant workers stranded at Jalandhar railway station, bus stand” carried in Jalandhar Tribune on March 23, the Youth Football Club (YFC), Rurka Kalan, and Lupinder Singh, District Soil Conservation Officer, on Saturday came to the rescue of the stranded workers and arranged vehicles to reach them their respective destinations.

As all modes of public transport continue to remain off the roads in the state due to curfew, the migrant workers had been spending time at night shelters and outside the railway station since March 22.

Lupinder Singh, with the help of the YFC, on Saturday arranged transportation for nearly seven to eight stranded workers, including Jaiprakash who was accompanied by his wife and a one-month old baby, to Ludhiana in their emergency vehicle. Jaiprakash, who travelled from Sitapur (UP), had been stuck at the city railway station after the train services were suspended in view of the ‘Janata Curfew’ on March 22.

Expressing gratitude to the YFC, Jaiprakash said he had been staying at Raen Basera near the Damoria flyover for the past few days. He desperately wanted to return to his rented accommodation in Ludhiana as he was not comfortable here and her wife was unwell. He had no acquaintance in Jalandhar from whom he could seek help, so he was feeling helpless here. He thanked the YFC for their help.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Gurmangal Das, managing director, YFC, said, “The country is going through difficult times and being responsible citizens we must come forward and contribute in whatever way possible. There are people who were not aware of the imposition of the curfew and were stranded at various places and we wanted that they reach their homes safely,” he said, adding that this was just a small effort to serve society and help the administration.
