Yuvika 2020: ISRO to hold Young Scientist Programme

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to organise Young Scientist Programme (Yuvika 2020) from May 11 to May 22. The state Education Department has asked school principals in the state to send the names of interested students who are studying in Class IX through the ISRO website. ISRO will select three students from every state. In the programme, famous scientists will interact with the students and share their experiences.

The department has asked the principals to register the students on www.isro.gov.in by February 24. And ISRO would announce the names of the selected candidates on March 2.

The programme is primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space applications to younger ones with the intent of arousing their interest in emerging areas of space activities. The programme is, thus, aimed at creating awareness among the youngsters who are the future building blocks of the nation. ISRO has chalked out the programme to ‘catch them young’.

The programme will be of two weeks’ duration and the schedule will include invited talks, experience sharing by eminent scientists, facility and lab visits, exclusive sessions for discussions with experts, practical and feedback sessions.

The selection will be done through online registration and is based on the Class VIII academic performance and extracurricular activities.

According to the selection criteria, various points would be looked into such as the performance in the Class VIII examination, prize in school events conducted by the school or education board from 2016 onwards (like elocution, debate, essay writing) at the district/state/national/ international level (The higher Ievel will be considered for weightage), winners of district/state/national/international-level sports activities conducted by the school or education board from 2016 onwards (The higher level will be considered for weightage), scouts and guides (NCC or NSS member), during the current academic year (2019-2020), studying in a rural school.

As per information, the students belonging to the rural areas have been given special weightage in the selection criteria. ISRO is proposed to conduct the residential programme during May 11 to 22 at four ISRO centres. The selected students will be asked to report to any one of the ISRO/Department of Space (DOS) centres located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram.
