Chandigarh, December 24

Confusion prevailed among schoolchildren as many of them turned up this morning at schools that were shut down by the UT Administration yesterday in view of the bird flu scare.

Late last evening, the UT Administration ordered the closure of all schools falling within a 3-km radius of Sukhna Lake with immediate effect.

All schools which had to display the list of eligible students today postponed the same as these were closed in view of the winter vacation. The schools also have to upload the list of eligible students whose admission forms were approved on their websites.

Sources in the Education Department said schools had applied to postpone the process of displaying the list to December 30. While a few have displayed the list as per the schedule date.

All other schools will have to update their websites by the last week of December as after finalising the list, schools would then conduct draw of lots between January 10 to January 28. On January 28, the schools will display the list of selected students.

During a visit to schools this morning, it was found that a few students who were clueless about the orders reached their school. Sanjeev, a parent of one of the student, said he was not aware about these instructions due to which he came to drop his child at DAV Public School in Sector 7 here.

He said the guard at the entry gate of the school informed him about the orders of the administration. Even at other schools, security guards deployed at the gates said those students who come to the school by schoolbuses did not come as buses were not sent to their places and some of the students, who came with their parents, were informed about it.

Clueless parents were seen at the entry gates waiting to have a look at the list but they have to return empty handed.

The parents who reached the schools complained that the school authorities should have put the information on their websites about the postponement of the date.

The parents of the selected children will have to deposit the fees from February 1 to February 20.
