Jalandhar, December 24

Alleging rampant corruption and poor functioning of the Municipal Corporation (MC), Congress councillors today submitted a memorandum to Mayor Sunil Jyoti to call a special House meeting to discuss various issues pertaining to the alleged corruption worth crores of rupees in the toilet block project and also the MC’s failure to take any action against the building branch officials for their alleged connivance in some unauthorised construction of buildings and colonies.
“There is a big scam to the tune of Rs 25 crore in the toilet block projects. While the construction cost of around 40 toilet blocks at prominent sites is coming out to be around Rs 5 crore, the contractor, with advertising rights for up to 10 years, is expected to earn a whopping income of around Rs 30 to 35 crore,” said Jagdeesh Raja, councillor, Ward No. 36.
The councillors have demanded to hold a special meeting under Section 55 (2) of the Municipal Council Act 1976 that permits to call a special house meeting on the written requisition of one fourth elected councillors.
