Gen Z weighs in on Modi’s Iran strategy

"Since independence, India’s global role has remained steady, centered on diplomacy, trade, and dialogue rather than direct conflict. However, the rapid spread of information now shapes public perception, drawing India into an ongoing information war. The recent Middle East crisis has increased economic pressure during a critical development phase. While diplomacy has secured a fragile fuel supply through the Strait of Hormuz, domestic markets face risks from speculation, hoarding, and demand shocks, requiring stronger internal measures."

"India has navigated the Gulf crisis with commendable pragmatism, exercising foreign policy anchored in the primacy of national interest. It has struck a careful balance, resisting calls for moralistic self-aggrandizement while seeking to extract the most from an already difficult situation. With disruptions to oil and gas supplies, straining businesses, and with nearly ten million Indians in the Gulf exposed to financial and physical risks, such an approach is indispensable. This is no longer the old order where Israel was a pariah, nor are "traditional" allies being abandoned as engagement with Iran ensures secure passage for Indian shipping through Hormuz."

"Modi’s silence is not indifference – it’s calculated. He continues to pursue a policy of strategic autonomy which doesn’t make him accountable for the destruction in Iran. His deliberate silence is aimed at protecting India’s energy imports and safeguarding millions of Indians working in the Gulf. But his silence is outdated. India should not be seen as a bystander but as a peace-seeker. There should be a clear call for peace. By advocating dialogue at global forums, offering humanitarian assistance, & quietly mediating through backchannels, India could reinforce its image as a peace broker. Modi's prolonged quiet diplomacy risks being seen as hesitation rather than leadership."

"India has maintained balanced relations with multiple countries, positioning itself as a trusted global partner. If PM Modi is expected to assist in a potential Iran-related conflict, India is more likely to play the role of a mediator rather than taking sides. This approach aligns with India’s strategic interests including its ongoing involvement in significant infrastructure projects in Iran. A war could disrupt oil supplies, severely impacting India’s economy. Such conflicts lead to significant loss of lives and economic setbacks for the countries involved. By acting as a peace broker, India can help de-escalate tensions, maintain diplomatic balance and contribute to global stability."

"India must act with balance and responsibility in global conflicts. While the personal rapport between PM Modi and Donald Trump is often highlighted, decisions involving tensions with Iran should not be based on friendship alone. India has long followed a policy of strategic neutrality and peaceful diplomacy. Instead of directly helping one side, India can play the role of a mediator, encouraging dialogue and reducing tensions. This approach protects India’s own economic and security interests while also strengthening its global image as a responsible power. In today's interconnected world, promoting peace is more valuable than taking sides in conflicts that may escalate unpredictably."

"India could play a constructive diplomatic role in easing tensions between the US and Iran, given its longstanding ties with both sides. PM Modi has maintained strong relations with Donald Trump while also engaging with Tehran on strategic and economic fronts. With a significant portion of global oil trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz, any regional instability directly impacts India’s energy security and economy. This gives New Delhi both the incentive and the opportunity to support diplomatic efforts. However, India must also weigh the risks of over involvement, as maintaining strategic neutrality has long been a cornerstone of its foreign policy."
