US Open

Agassi, Hingis begin on winning note

NEW YORK, Aug 31 (AFP) — World number two Andre Agassi delivered a warning rolling to a 76-minute victory while top-ranked Martina Hingis received a wake-up call here last night at the US Open.

French Open champion Agassi routed 102nd-ranked Swede Nicklas Kulti 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, showing the strength and speed that lifted the 29-year-old American back to the top after sinking to 141st in the world in 1997.

“It’s never as easy as it looks,” Agassi said. “It looked easier than it was. It’s never simple. It’s always tough to get started. Sometimes the nerves translate well, but you never know how you’re going to start.

Hingis began her quest for Grand Slam redemption by beating 74th-ranked Czech Kveta Hrdlickova 6-1, 7-5, to reach a second-round match against Sarah Pitkowski of France.

Australian Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia and third-seeded American Venus Williams also advanced while number six Amanda Coetzer of South Africa became the first seed blown away on a blustery day.

World number one Pete Sampras, fighting back and hip injuries, waits until tomorrow to start his quest for an unprecedented 13th career Grand Slam singles title against 31st-ranked Marat Safin of Russia.

Today’s schedule finds two-time defending champion Pat Rafter of Australia facing 26th-ranked Frenchman Cedric Pioline and 1998 women’s winner Lindsay Davenport facing doubles partner Corina Morariu.

A record crowd of 27,809 attended first-day matches.

Agassi, who next plays 124th-rated German qualifier Axel Pretzsch, hit the shot of the day by swatting a between-the-legs forehand winner while running from the net. Kulti could only kick at the ball as it passed him.

He matched his previous most dominant US Open performance, when he surrendered four games to Romanian Adrian Voinea in the second round two years ago. Agassi, who became only the fifth man to complete a career Grand Slam when he won the French Open earlier this year, received cheers when he changed his shirt for his cut form.

Australian Open champion Hingis suffered a humbling loss to Steffi Graf in the French Open final and briefly split from mother-coach Melanie Molitor until a first-round Wimbledon loss and month off revitalised her.

Hingis, the 1997 winner and 1998 runner-up here, seeks her seventh 1999 title, having already captured crowns at Tokyo, Hilton Head, Berlin, San Diego and Toronto as well as the year’s first Grand Slam event.

Hingis struggled to close out a foe she beat easily in the French Open, surrendering a 10th-game break to level the set as Hrdlickova pounded 19 winners in the second set.

Jelena Dokic, the 16-year-old Aussie who ousted Hingis on her way to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, made 45 unforced errors in losing to 10th seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain 7-5, 6-1 in 69 minutes. Coetzer lost 6-1, 7-5 to 20th-ranked Romanian Irina Spirlea, taking the top-seeded foe from Williams’ semifinal path.

Kumble, Kambli axed for Toronto meet

MUMBAI, Aug 31 (PTI) — The national cricket selectors today axed paceman Javagal Srinath, leg spinner Anil Kumble and batsman Vinod Kambli in the wake of India’s poor showing at the Colombo triangular one-day tournament while announcing the team for the three-match limited overs series against the West Indies to be held at Toronto on September 11, 12 and 14.

Srinath, in fact, has been left out for India’s next engagement itself, the September 2-7 tri-nation series at Singapore, also featuring the West Indies and Zimbabwe.

The selectors, however, said Srinath has been “rested” while explaining that the other two have been dropped due to their poor form in Colombo where India played their first tournament since the May-June World Cup in England.

Srinath, who turned 30 today and was in the original party of 15 for Sri Lanka and Singapore, will be replaced by his Karnataka mate and left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi who will also be part of the 14-man squad for Toronto with young all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar.

Kumble and left-hander Kambli have, however, been retained for Singapore.

Cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters after a two-hour meeting of the selectors that Srinath had made a request for rest after the Toronto series but the selectors felt it was better to give him a longer break in view of India’s packed international calendar.

Anil Kumble, who was totally out of form in Sri Lanka, and Kambli, who failed to make an impression in his comeback bid, were both omitted “because of poor form”, selection committee chairman Ajit Wadekar added.

“I think he (Kumble) looked a bit out of rhythm in Lanka. But he is a great bowler and I am sure will get back into the team,” Wadekar said.

“Kambli looked a bit unfit and his performance was also not upto the mark,” said the selection committee chairman who had groomed the Mumbai left hander in his first few years at the international level as the team’s cricket manager.

While Kumble got to play in all the four matches in Sri Lanka, Kambli was given the boot after his poor show in the lone match he figured in - the league match against Australia at Colombo.

Wadekar said he felt the entire team looked somewhat below par on the fitness front in Sri Lanka because of the long break from cricket after the World Cup.

“We have all the talent and potential but did not live upto the expectations. We did not do any justice to our potential,” was his and his co-selectors assessment of the team’s dismal show in the Emerald Isles.

About Kanitkar’s inclusion after being left out of the World Cup party besides the Lankan and Singapore tours, Wadekar said the Pune-based player was getting lot of runs in domestic cricket and was a success for India “A” against the Windies “A” last season at home.

Lanka beat Aussies, lift title

COLOMBO, Aug 31 (PTI) — Wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana cracked a fighting, unbeaten 95 as a super-charged Sri Lanka inflicted on Australia their first defeat as World Cup champions, by eight wickets with 10.3 overs left, to lift the title in the AIWA Cup Triangular Cricket Tournament tonight.

Effecting an unimaginable turnaround after a recent low, the young islanders first rattled the formidable Aussie batting to bowl them out for a modest 202 in exactly 50 overs and achieved the low target with panache by racing to 208 for two wickets in just 39.3 overs at the Premadasa Stadium.

Opening the innings as skipper Sanath Jayasuriya hurt a torn webbing between his right thumb and forefinger while fielding, Kaluwitharana played with great responsibility to end the 11-match winning streak of the Australians to the delirious approbation of the packed home crowd.

Kaluwitharana (95) smashed 11 boundaries in a superb 117-ball knock and hoisted a 110-run second wicket partnership with talented left-hander Russel Arnold (47) to snatch the match away from their surprisingly subdued rivals.

The stylish Marvan Atapattu (24) lend his weight at the outset and Jayasuriya ended the mismatch with a cameo of 26 off 23 balls, pulling left-armer Darren Lehmann into the stands to seal the issue.

“Man of the match” Kaluwitharana missed a deserving second one-day hundred, but the victory set up by superb bowling and tigerish fielding after Steve Waugh chose to take first strike, gave the hosts a great psychological boost ahead of the three-Test series.

Jeev tied at 30th position
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Aug 31 — India’s Jeev Milkha Singh shot a two-over par 74 under trying conditions on the final day of the Scottish PGA Championship to finish tied for the 30th place.

According to information reaching here from the par-72, 7,053 — yard Monarch’s Course in Gleneagles, Scotland, Jeev began steadily to record a bogey-free front nine which included a birdie on the 564-yard, par-5 ninth hole to finish his outward journey at one-under. But bogies on 10th and 14th, followed by a double bogey on the par-4 16th ruined his card before he pulled one back on the 18th hole with a birdie. The conditions, reportedly, were extremely wet, windy and cold.

Jeev thus aggregated six-over 294 for the tournament. The finish also meant he retained the 38th place in the European PGA Tour’s Volvo Order of Merit.

Another Indian interest in the tournament, Daniel Chopra, played a much more steadier round of one-over 73 to finish at three-over 291 for the tournament, which gave him a share of the 15th place.

The tournament was won by England’s Warren Bennett, who beat Netherland’s Rolf Muntz on the first hole of the playoff after both finished their 72 holes at six-under 282. Bennett carded a 69 on the final day to tie with Muntz, who returned a level-par card. Bennett made a four-footer birdie putt on the first playoff hole to seal the issue.

Results (after 72 holes): Ist 282 — Warren Bennett (Eng) 70, 69, 72, 69: 2nd: 282 — Rolf Muntz (net) 66, 71, 73, 72; T-3rd: 283 — Klas Eriksson (Swe) 68, 70, 71, 74, Roger Winchester (Eng) 71, 68, 72, 72: 5th: 286 — Per Nymann (Swe) 72, 69, 72, 73: T-6th: 287 — Andrew Mclardy (RSA) 73, 71, 69, 74: Ian Hutchings (RSA) 70, 74, 70, 74 T-30th: 294 — Jeev Milkha Singh (India) 72, 72, 76, 74.

Graf highest-ranked player to quit

NEW YORK, Aug 31 (AP) — Three months after she won the last of her 22 Grand Slam tournament titles, Steffi Graf has disappeared from the WTA Tour rankings.

At No 3 in the world, the 30-year-old German became the highest-ranked player ever to retire from professional play. She informed the WTA Tour on Saturday of her decision to remove herself from the rankings.

Margaret Smith Court in 1977, Chris Evert in 1990, Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere in 1994, Martina Navratilova in 1995 and Kimiko Date in 1996 all requested their names be removed from the rankings shortly after retiring.

NOW A ROUTINE: Nicolas Escude of France has raised the come-from-behind rally to an art form.

In the 1998 Australian Open, Escude rallied from two sets down to win three consecutive matches, the first time that has been done in the open era. En route to the quarterfinals, he defeated Magnus Larsson, Richey Reneberg and Nicolas Kiefer.

On Monday, Escude did it again, dropping the first two sets 4-6, 4-6 to Magnus Gustafsson before winning the next three 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, 6-4 as the US Open began its two-week run at the National Tennis Center.

ATTENDANCE UP: The WTA Tour is becoming more popular.

Attendance for the 1999 tour has already surpassed 3 million, the first time that many people have watched women’s tennis prior to the US Open.

With a record crowd of 74,236 at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, Connecticut, last week, the WTA Tour 1999 attendance total is 3,026,491 in 42 tournaments. The attendance record of 3,675,094 was set last year.

UNLUCKY LOSER: Phillip King of Long Beach, California, has yet to win a match in his two ATP Tour events. But he has a good reason.

By the luck of the draw, the 17-year-old right-hander had to play Pete Sampras, the world’s top player and reigning Wimbledon champion, in the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles in July. Then, playing in his first US Open, King’s first-round opponent was 12th-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, who won Wimbledon in 1996.

King received a wild-card entry into the US Open by winning the USTA National Boys’ 18-and-under title in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He received a wild-card entry into the Mercedes-Benz Cup by winning the boys’ 18 title at the Easter bowl.

SPECIAL EXHIBIT: Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, Bill Tilden, Don Budge, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe will be among the stars at the US Open this year.

The former champions are part of an exhibit entitled “Their Eyes on the Prize,” which can be viewed at newly renovated Louis Armstrong Stadium at the National Tennis Centre, site of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament. The exhibit is jointly presented by the United States Tennis Association and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Historic trophies and champions from more than 100 years of US National Championships will be featured in the exhibition, including Richard N Pears, Helen Wills Moody, Helen Jacobs, Tony Trabert, Billie Jean King and Chris Evert.

“One of the Hall of Fame’s key missions is to bring tennis history to broader audiences and tennis enthusiasts beyond the walls of the Hall of Fame Museum in Newport, Rhode Island,” said Jane Brown, president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. “By teaming with the USTA to present this exhibition at the US Open, we will give more people an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the sport’s rich history.”

Good show by w’lifters

NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (UNI) — India’s Sanamacha Chanu bagged three medals, including two silvers and a bronze, as the country claimed eight medals, two silvers and six bronze so far in the ongoing Asian Weightlifting Championship at Wu Han in China.

According to information received here by veteran lifter P.K. Mahanand, in the senior women’s 48 kg event, India’s Sanamacha Chanu claimed two silvers and a bronze with a total lift of 172.5 kg. She lifted 97.5 kg in jerk to win a silver and 75 kg in snatch to claim a bronze.

The winner in this category was China’s Li Zhou who set up three world records with a total of 195.

Debutante Shandhya won three bronze medals for India in the 48 kg junior category. She had a total of 150 kg, lifting 65 kg in snatch and 85 kg in jerk.

In the men’s category T. Mithu clinched two bronze in the 56 kg event. He lifted 112.5 kg for snatch and 140 for jerk to total 240 kg.

According to Wg Cdr P.K. Mahanand, though Indian lifters have done well so far in the Asian championship, their performance fails to match the results of 1995 Asian championship held at Pusan (S. Korea) when Kunjarani and Karnam Malleswari won a gold each.

Parminder for AFC camp
By Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 31 — Former international footballer Parminder Singh, who at present is employed as coach with premier soccer outfit JCT Phagwara, has been selected for the first Asian Football Confederation-sponsored football conditioning camp to be held at Kuala Lumpur from September 6 to 10.

According to a communication received from the secretary of the All-India Football Federation, Mr Kedar Nath Mour, two Indians have been selected for the camp which is primarily aimed at updating the knowledge and skill of coaches in the Asian region. The other Indian who has been selected for the camp is Abdul Latif who is registered with the Assam Football Association.

Parminder, who is among the best known midfielders that India has produced, is a NIS qualified coach who was also awarded the AFC ‘C’ coaching award. Besides assisting Sukhwinder Singh in coaching the JCT football team, which incidentally won the inaugural National Football League in 1996, Parminder has also been coaching the Punjab football team.

Hailing from Boor Majra village near Kurali, Parminder began his football career under the watchful eyes of veteran coach Ram Narain Singh. Initially he opted to join the Border Security Force football team but JCT managed to lure him into their fold where he has been ever since.

Known as gentleman of the football ground, Parminder did not earn a single red card during his playing career, a fact which prompted the Punjab School Education Board to include a full chapter on his life and achievements in the syllabus for standard seven in the school curriculum of the state.

Parminder represented India continuously from 1975 to 1986 in all major tournaments, including the Asian Games. In 1983 he was selected in the Asian All-Star team, an honour which only a few Indians can boast of. The crowning glory came in the year 1993 when he was declared the ‘footballer of the decade’ by the All-India Football Federation and the then Prime Minister, Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, presented him the award at Jamshedpur after which he hung up his boots and started devoting his time to coaching.

Tendulkar’s problem not diagnosed

COLOMBO, Aug 31(PTI) —Sachin Tendulkar’s recurring back problem has not been “completely diagnosed yet” but several clinical tests done by doctors including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not revealed anything adverse, cricket board secretary, Jaywant Lele, yesterday said.

Earlier reports that the back pain experienced by the master batsman was due to his using a heavy bat was purely speculative and “nothing conclusive has yet been established”. Lele told reporters here.

The board secretary revealed that Tendulkar had also experienced back stiffness during India’s World Cup campaign in England which made it difficult to conclude that the problem arose due to excessive humidity in Colombo.

Lele said Tendulkar would be travelling to Singapore for the triangular one-day tournament to be held there from September 2 to 7 from here and was also scheduled to go to Toronto for the three-match series against the West Indies to be played later in the month.

The Indian team is scheduled to leave for Singapore today night, he said.

The national selectors were not contemplating any changes for the Singapore tournament despite the Indian team’s poor performance which saw them knocked out of the ongoing triangular tournament here.

Tendulkar experienced severe back stiffness that forced him to miss the second league tie against Australia on August 29.

Lewis-Holyfield tie on Nov 13

LAS VEGAS (Nevada), Aug 31 (AFP) — Britain’s Lennox Lewis and American Evander Holyfield are expected to receive about $ 15 million each in a heavyweight unification rematch here November 13.

Alan Hopper, a spokesman for casino operator Park Place Entertainment, and a Don King Productions spokesman both confirmed on Saturday that a deal had been made for the long-awaited repeat of a controversial March draw.

Lewis owns the World Boxing Council crown while Holyfield has the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation titles in the wake of their draw at Madison Square Garden five months ago.

Most observers thought Lewis won the fight, using superior reach to jab his way past Holyfield in a tactical fight which he dominated statistically.

But the crowd booed lustfully when judges’ results showed one for Lewis, one for Holyfield and one rating the fight a draw — in effect robbing Lewis of the defining triumph of his career.

The outcome did ensure Don King would not lose his grip on the heavyweight title scene after a break with lucrative heavyweight Mike Tyson and guaranteed King another King’s ransom for the rematch.

Details of the fight are expected to be announced here Tuesday in a news conference at the Hilton Hotel.
