Rama Mandi roundabout to be repaired within a week
Jalandhar, September 7 The roundabout is an important entry point to the city on the Jalandhar-Chandigarh road. Its condition deteriorated in the past two months as potholes formed. A large number of VIPs, including ministers belonging to Jalandhar, pass through the route daily but they hardly pay heed to the inconvenience caused to
commuters. The administration is also planning to install traffic lights at the roundabout before November 15. This was revealed by Mr Ramesh Dogra, the Minister for Technical Education and the Chairman of the District Grievances Redressal Committee, who chaired the monthly meeting of the committee here today. Mr Dogra directed the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation Commissioner to ensure that encroachments made by car dealers on the GT Road and government lands be removed without any delay. He said school buses would not be allowed to carry passengers. Other buses would also not be allowed to carry beyond their permissible capacities. Mr Dogra, however, did not mention anything about over-loading of auto-rickshaws which carry schoolchildren. School managements generally wash their hands off by saying that use of auto-rickshaws for transportation of children was an arrangement between parents and auto-rickshaw owners. Mr Dogra said the beautification of the Shahid Udham Singh Nagar park was underway at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and the link roads of Noorpur-Dhanal and Jalandhar-Mithapur would be repaired on priority basis. |
Cycle of practical files
Phagwara, September 7 Practical files are a record of observations and reading of experiments, which students perform as part of their course. Students buy these readymade files from the market, and reuse them or copy them. “We only tear VIII th standard files. Around 1,000 students are appearing for compartment examination this week, and you will get their files without any page being torn at the end of this week,” says an employee at Government Senior Secondary School in Phagwara. This is an organized business. Small shopkeepers buy checked files from schools, and sell them to the students. Such files of schools can be found easily in these shops. Jaswinder Kaur, Principal, Government Senior Secondary School on Banga Road, says, “It cannot happen in our school. External examiners tear each file in two pieces at the end of the session.” Practicals are an essential part of the syllabus of subjects like chemistry, physics and physical education according to the CBSE guidelines. Shopkeepers sell a practical file for Rs 75 in off season. This price goes up to Rs 200-300 in the peak season. “My friends and I bought checked practical files from a book depot in Satnampura to copy and we scored very well,” said Vinod with a mischievous smile. He is now pursuing his post -graduation. Jagdeep, a student, says, “Our files are checked at the end of the year, and teachers sign them without any objection.” |

Badal blames Amarinder
Jalandhar, September 7 Mr. Badal, who was addressing a rally at Adampur today, has also predicted that the Congress would be wiped out in the forthcoming Assembly elections. Launching a scathing attack on the Congress party, Mr. Badal went to the extent of dubbing it as a party which, was neck deep in corruption. “Nobody is happy with the working of this government. Development is only seen in government advertisements and not at the ground. The ground reality is entirely different and people have to face a large number of difficulties on account of lack of initiatives on the part of the government,” alleged Mr. Badal. Mr. Badal also alleged that the Congress had also ignored the interests of Dalits in the state and they were merely treated as a vote bank and nothing else. Senior Akali leaders, including, former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, Mr. Ajit Singh Kohar, Mr. Manpreet Singh Badal, Mr. Sarbjit Singh Makkar and Mr. D.S. Dhirowal also addressed the rally. |
Wife, lover held
Nawanshahr, September 7 In his complaint to the police, Rachhpal Singh had alleged that his wife Sharanjit Kaur had illicit relations with Baltej Singh and the two had hatched a conspiracy to kill him. “As I wanted to go to Canada, my wife asked for my passport for visa. She said she knew a priest of a ‘dera’ in Nakodar who could get a visa for me. A few days later she told me that my flight was scheduled for August 25. “On August 23, she asked me to visit the ‘dera’ along with her and Baltej Singh to offer prayer before leaving. On our way back, we stopped for tea, in which she put sleeping pills. “I fell unconscious. Then the two forced me out of the car and Baltej hit me on the neck with a sharp-edged weapon,” Rachhpal said in his complaint. Rachhpal was admitted to a private hospital in Phagwara. The police registered a case on Rachhpal’s statement. |
