Teachers’ Day today
‘Teaching is passion, not profession’
Sudhanshu Verma & Harbinder Singh
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, September 4
Principal of the Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Bathinda Military Station, T.D. Garg, said that in past, teachers were doing selfless service.

But now, with money entering the profession, the relationship between teachers and students had become more or less of give-and-take.

He added that teachers were failing to be a moral guide and a role model for students. Garg, however, said it was not applicable to everyone and every institution.

When asked why now-a-days students do not want to be a teacher, he said things were changing as many students want to join academics. Teaching had become a paying profession besides gaining respect and quality of life.

He said teachers were still nation builders and it was the duty of society to ensure that mentors get their due.

Talking about role-relationship, Rajinder Kaur, headmistress of the Government High School, Chak Ram Singh Wala, said that in today's world, relationship between a teacher and a taught was more like friend and guide rather than guru-sishya trend.

Now-a-days, a teacher had to adjust with the psychology of a student and come to the understanding-level of a student and should behave like an elder friend, brother, sister rather than a strict commander.

She also said that in this competitive and challenging world, it was not easy to handle the young brains as they were pre-mature giants. The contemporary teacher has to be a psychologist first rather than a mentor.

It is the responsibility of society to give the teachers their due. Teaching is a passion, not profession, she said.

Geeta Arora, a Physics teacher at Government School, Bhucho Kalan, said, "These days, teachers are not respected by the students as they were in the yesteryear. The reason is that the society has turned materialistic. Commercialism rules today."

"The teachers lack devotion today, which ought to be changed," chipped in Jasjeet Kaur, a Chemistry teacher from the same school.

The teachers should introspect on the Teachers' Day. Just as farmers check what they gained on Baisakhi, the teachers should do the same on this day. They should ponder over what the students required and where they lacked in providing them the same," says Kulwinder Singh, who teaches Social Studies at the Government Middle School, Phoos Mandi.

Talking about the problems related to salary that the teachers in the state were witnessing, he said, "Punjab is among the top three states as far as the pay-scale for the teachers is concerned. There are delays in the salaries only during the months of May and June, which I think they, who claim to be nation-builders, must adjust to," he added.

"Quality of teachers have dropped. The Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) period has ceased to exist. Moral education and values are missing. Until and unless we instill moral values among our pupils we don't have any right that our pupils touch our feet," said Kulwinder.

Principal of the MSD Senior Secondary School, Suraj Setia, said to mark the occasion, the school would distribute the compilation of teachings by Dr S. Radhakrishnan among the school teachers. Besides, the school would also honour Kiran Bansal, a teacher of English, on the occasion.

Talking about the significance of the celebrations, he said it encouraged them as it was an appreciation of their work.

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, September 4
The death of a youth, whose car fell from the incomplete railway overbridge (ROB) on the Bathinda-Talwandi Sabo road near ITI Chowk on Wednesday night, has exposed the poor state of road safety arrangements.

Though the family of the deceased has blamed no one for the mishap, yet the carelessness on the part of the authorities and the contractor concerned can not be ruled out as there was neither any signboard nor any barricade to restrict the movement of vehicles there.

Dheeraj Gupta (28), owner of a marriage palace, Queensland, situated on Goniana road was found dead as his car, a Mitsubishi Lancer (CH03E-0227), fell from the incomplete ROB in the wee hours.

As per the information available with the Civil Lines police, the youth, after attending a party at Krishna Continental, a hotel located on Bibwala road, was returning to his house in Veer Colony.

Due to some undisclosed reason, he lost his way and drove the car towards the overbridge. The ROB was incomplete and there were no lights which led to the mishap. Investigating officer Gurnam Singh said the family was not willing for a further probe.

A statement was given by the deceased's brother, Varun Gupta, and the body was handed over to the family after the postmortem. After registering a case under section 174 of the IPC, the police started inquest proceedings.

Moga MC polls
SAD candidate elected unopposed

Tribune News Service

Moga, September 4
The ruling SAD-BJP nominee Sandeep Sood, who filed his nomination papers from ward number 26 for the ensuing municipal council (MC) elections here, has been elected unopposed on the last day of the filing of nomination papers.

As many as 150 candidates had filed their nomination papers, the scrutiny of which would be done on Friday. The nominees can withdraw their papers on Saturday. The elections are slated for September 14.

Congratulating Sood, Barjinder Singh Brar, son of senior SAD leader Jathedar Tota Singh, who is a candidate for the president’s post of the local body, claimed that the SAD-BJP alliance would sweep the elections.

He promised to develop Moga as a model town by finishing the pending development works besides starting new projects.

The BJP candidates filed their nomination papers for 10 seats with great pomp and show this morning.

Meanwhile, the Congress candidates and few independent candidates backed by local MLA Joginder Pal Jain have begun door-to-door campaigning.

Local political observers were of the view that Jain’s candidates in many wards of the new town area and a couple of outer area wards were going strong.

No matter, Jain had a good influence in some pockets of the town but the infighting in his party could upset his political calculations.

So far, many Congress leaders have not supported Jain and his candidates openly.

Ravaged by Kosi, they arrive in Bathinda
Sandeep Sinha
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, September 4
The influx of people from the flood-hit areas of Bihar has started becoming noticeable in Bathinda. In the afternoon today, many of those uprooted because of the Kosi deluge, were sighted at the local railway station, huddled together.

Jugal Kishore, who hails from Murliganj, south of Madhepura, the area worst affected by the floods in Bihar, said he had arrived in Bathinda via Rewari in Haryana. Jugal Kishore has left his family behind at a relief camp where they will be staying for some time to come.

Meanwhile, he has arrived here to look for work and sustain himself and his family.

From Bathinda, he will go to Malout where he would work at mandis, cleaning the paddy husk.

Jugal Kishore, however, made it clear that he would return to the comfort of his home and hearth, after the situation returns to normalcy.

Mukesh Kumar, who was accompanying him, hails from the neighbouring Banmankhi, also devastated by the swollen Kosi. He also echoed similar sentiments.

Parmod, who is from Samastipur in Bihar, said he was here not because of the floods but only in search of work.

When TNS asked whether they had got work under the NREGA scheme, he replied in the negative.

Shravan Kumar Das, from Devanpura near Rosera, said the paddy crop in Bihar had grown tall now and they were waiting for it to ripen. So, they had ample time and therefore, decided to come to Punjab in search of work.

From Bathinda, he was planning to go to Abohar to work at Pake Khal or rajwaha (canal distributary) construction sites, along with others from his area.

Das also said that he would return home at the time of paddy harvesting. In Punjab, such work is done mostly through machines and so he would prefer to return to Bihar at that time.

Similar was the tale of Ranjit Mahto, who said they had come here to earn money and send it back to their families in Bihar for sustenance.

With the number of trains connecting Punjab to Bihar being in abundance, these labourers are not finding it difficult to move out.

Coupled with the sheer enormity of the task of providing relief and rehabilitation to the flood-affected, it seems it will be a while before they return back to Bihar.

‘SAD murdering democracy’
Rajay Deep
Tribune News Service

Muktsar, September 4
Accusing the district administration and the ruling SAD leaders of murdering democracy, Congress activists along with a number of contestants for the Muktsar municipal council elections, slated for September 14, staged a dharna and raised slogans outside the mini- secretariat, here today.

The protesters accused the area in-charge of the SAD and a member of the Zila Parishad of using muscle power and tearing off their nomination papers. They alleged that the policemen present at the spot remained mute spectators.

Narrating their plight, district president of the Congress, Gursant Singh Brar, said a number of SAD workers were occupying the chairs in the offices of the Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar, where the forms were to be submitted.

Though the time of form submission was till 3 pm, but under pressure from the SAD activists, the district authorities fixed 2 pm as the cut-off time.

Brar further rued that the movement of Congress candidates was being scanned and only the candidate and his proposer were allowed to go inside, but SAD workers were allowed to move freely. “In the stairs leading towards the offices, SAD musclemen were standing, and they tore off the nomination papers of our candidates,” he alleged.

Gagan Deep alias Bobby Kamra, who was one of the willing Congress contestants, alleged that his form was torn off by the area in-charge of SAD, Sukhdarshan Singh Marar, and member of the Zila Parishad, Rozy Barkandi.

“I tried to contact the district officials but the mobile phones of all civil and police officials including the DSP, SSP, ADC and DC were switched off. They were also absent from their offices which is sufficient to suggest that they are hand-in-glove with the SAD leaders,” Gagan Deep alleged.

Speaking further, he said, “Sensing the situation, I had already sent my nomination form to the state election commission at 1 pm, which is an evidence of the malpractice going on. Meanwhile, SAD (B) leaders played a trick and asked the officials to accept a few forms of Congress candidates to be on the safer side.”

The Congress leaders mentioned the names of Ajit Singh Kang (5), Gagan Deep (6), Chandgi Ram (9), Darshan Kamboj (15), Om Parkash (16) and Alka Teria (19) as candidates whose forms had been torn off.

Sources in mini-secretariat said the SAD-BJP combine submitted 27 forms, while the Congress could submit only nine forms.

The district Congress committee was waiting for instructions from the party high command before chalking out its future strategy.
