third time in 4 decades

This is the third time, the DMK is
parting ways with the Congress, against which the party was founded by
CN Annadurai and his colleagues in 1949. It was DMK chief Karunanidhi,
who deviated from the firm anti-Congress line pursued by its founders
and formed an alliance with the Congress, led by former Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi in 1971, against the wishes of the parent organisation the
Dravidar Kazhagam.

to review security curbs affecting J-K tourism

The government plans to undertake a
comprehensive review of a range of security-based restrictions that are
hampering the tourism potential of Jammu and Kashmir. A working group
comprising members of the ministries of Home, Defence, External Affairs,
the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and the state government is likely
to be set up for the purpose.

panel to probe Chhillar killings

A former Judge of the Punjab and
Haryana High Court, Justice TP Garg, will probe the killings of over 20
Sikhs in Hondh Chhillar village in Rewari district of Haryana and the
damage caused to their property in November 1984.

officer to head Singapore Army

Singapore has appointed Brigadier
General Ravinder Singh as its next army chief, the first Sikh in nearly
30 years to be given the force's baton. Brig Gen Ravinder Singh, 41,
will take over from Major-General Chan Chun Sing on March 25, the
Straits Times reported. A Singaporean of Indian origin, Brig Gen Singh
is currently the Deputy Secretary (Technology) in the Defence Ministry.
He had joined the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in December 1982.
