Ex-sarpanch jailed for rape: Kahna Ram, a former sarpanch of Khat Sajwar village in Sadulshehar segment of Sriganganagar, has been sentenced by a special court to life imprisonment for rape.
The police said the woman had on April 5, 2012, alleged that Kahna Ram and two of his friends forcibly entered her house at night when none else was at home. His accomplices stood guard outside as the sarpanch raped her. When her relatives reached home, the accused fled but were nabbed after a chase. The court sentenced Kahna Ram under Sections 376 and 450 of the IPC and also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.Ex-captain gets life term:
A court has sentenced Sandeep Tomar, a former Captain in Bihar Regiment, to life imprisonment for abetting his wife to commit suicide in Abohar on July 9, 2013. He has also been fined Rs 10,000. The police had arrested him about a week after the death of his wife Shaveta Singh. Her father Ram Naresh Singh had alleged that Shaveta’s inlaws harassed her and sought dowry. The police had registered FIR No. 126 against Captain Sandeep Tomar, his mother Padma Rani and father Mangal Singh of Kanpur u/s 304-B/34 IPC. Pathankot
City girl gets scholarship: Sakshi Gupta, who was a student of Partap World School, has been awarded Rs 4 lakh as part of Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) under the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) programme of the CBSE. She has bagged this scholarship for figuring among the top one per cent students in the CBSE Class XII examinations.
