Meeting
The Divisional Commissioner Mr R.N. Gupta, had a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners and PCS Officers of the division here on Thursday and issued certain instructions. He asked the officers to redress the grievances of the people on a priority basis.

Appointed
Dr Ved Parkash Behal of Jalalabad in this district has been appointed president to the Punjab Registered Medical Practitioners Association, according to Dr G S Dhawan, vice-president of the All India Registered Medical Practitioners Association, here on Thursday.

Appointed
Dr Tejinder Singh, Professor of the Paediatrics, Christian Medical College, has been appointed convener of the 5th International Congress of Tropical Paediatrics, to be held in Jaipur from February 10 to 15, according to an announcement made here on Thursday.

PATIALA
Extended
Punjabi University has extended the date of admission to its teaching departments and colleges affiliated to it till September 21 with a late fee of Rs 300, according to press note of the university on Thursday.

Eye camp
The Ghanaiya Jee Foundation and the Guru Arjan Kirtan Mandal has organised an eye operation camp at Amar Ashram. During the camp as many as 1000 patients were examined and 85 cataract operations were performed. Lenses were also fitted free of cost to 12 patients.

MOGA
Ban
The District Magistrate, Moga, on Friday banned all public meetings, assembly of persons, raising of slogans at public places in Moga district.

PHAGWARA
Surrenders
Akhil Shukla, a clerk in a local mill, who has allegedly embezzled Rs 5.40 lakh from the mill, has surrendered in the court, which remanded him in judicial custody till September 14.

Vaccinated
As many as 1,257 children were vaccinated against hepatitis-B during a week long subsidised vaccination camp organised by the regional office of the Department of Social Service and Survey, IGSA, at different local public schools which ended here on Friday.

Demand
The National Citizens' Council of Panchkula has urged HUDA to remove encroachments in the town.

Parishad week
A nine-day Parishad week will be celebrated by the local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad starting from September 20. During the week-long celebrations, talks on dental care, general health and other subjects will be organised.

SIRSA
Arrested
The police has arrested Hazoor Kaur and Jagsir Singh of Singpur village in this district on Thursday and seized 18 kg of poppy husk from their possession. It also seized 5 kg of poppy husk from Labh Singh of Daulatpura village. A case under Sections 15,16,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

Car recovered
The police said on Friday that five persons had been arrested and a stolen Maruti car recovered from their possession. The accused have been identified as Yagvinder of Mullah Majra village, Manjeet of Nahra village, Kuldeep and Asa Ram of Halalpur village and Ram Mehar of Balla village in Assandh of Karnal district. They had also committed thefts in Sonepat, Panipat and Jhajjar, the police said.

Gang busted
The police claims to have busted an inter-state gang dealing in narcotic drugs with the arrest of three of its members, including a woman, Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Friday. The police seized 74 kg of poppy husk from them.

Function
The valedictory function of the one-year diploma course in Agricultural Journalism was held at Haryana Agricultural University on Thursday. Mr S.V. Kapil, Station Director, All India Radio, Rohtak, gave away the certificates to the participants.

Suicide
Sandeep Mittal (22) committed suicide by consuming poison at Hansi on Thursday. It is reported that unemployment was the cause of his suicide.

KAITHAL
Priest injured
The priest of the Hanuman Mandir, Tatiana village, was injured when he was allegedly attacked by miscreants on the temple premises on Wednesday. The police has registered a case under Sections 323, 148, 149, 452 and 506 IPC against 11 persons.

Three arrested
The police has arrested Rakesh Kumar, Jagbir Singh and Inder Singh for allegedly snatching a jeep at gun point on August 6 at Chaushala village. A case has been registered against them.

SONEPAT
Urged
A deputation of the Punjabi Kalyan Sabha called on Mr Bansi Lal, Chief Minister, here on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum to him demanding allotment of government land for the construction of a Punjabi Bhavan here.

Drive
The Samajik Ekta Party, Haryana, has decided to launch a membership drive in the state on September 15, Mr Nafe Singh Dahiya, national president of the party said here on Thursday.

Resentment
Resentment prevails among residents of Model Town against the increasing activities of anti-social elements and the failure of the police to take action against them. The residents alleged that anti-social elements harassing women and girls in the area.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the HP State Panchayati Raj Department Employees Association: president — Mr Sanjiv Kumar Mahajan; senior vice-president — Mr Abdul Mazid; vice-president — Mr Nandlal and Mr Jagdishram Sharma; general secretary — Mr Harisingh Thakur; and treasurer — Mr Ravindernath Sharma.

Mini-libraries
Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kapil has said 1,000 mini-libraries will be set up in the district under the post-literacy programme. Addressing a district executive committee of the literacy programme here on Thursday, he said 897 mini-libraries had already been set up.

Bankers' club
The following have been elected office-bearers of the district Bankers Club: president — Mr N.L. Arora; general secretary — Mr U.K. Sachdeva and; treasurer — Mr D.P. Wadhawan.

Mr Mehar Singh Thakur, a member of the Ghumarwin panchayat samiti, has joined the Himachal Vikas Congress, according to Mr Gyan Chand Rattan, president of the Ghumanwin constituency, unit of the HVC, on Thursday.

Rally
The district unit of the CPM will send 500 workers to Delhi to participate in an anti-price rise rally on September 16. Mr Lakhanpal Sharma, district secretary of the party, said here on Friday that the party would also launch a "jan jagran" campaign.

Nirankari function
Baba Hardev Singh, chief of Sant Nirankari Mandal, has addressed Nirankaris here on Thursday. Thousands of devotees from Hamirpur, Mandi and Bilaspur districts attended the function.

NURPUR
Suicide
Vikas (14), a resident of Rinna village, committed suicide by consuming a pesticide on Thursday. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in a serious condition where he died.
