AMRITSAR
Dead:
Sat Pal Shant (78) office-in-charge of the Punjab Istri Sabha Relief Trust and a former municipal commissioner popularly known as "poet of the working class" passed away on Sunday following cardiac failure. The rasam pagri ceremony will be held in Krishan Mandir at Chheharta in the district on April 9.

ANANDPUR SAHIB
Media centre:
The Punjab Government has set up a media centre at Government Senior Secondary School for Girls opposite the ADC office here for the coverage of Khalsa tercentenary celebrations programmes.

BATHINDA
Bus-queue shelter: The Rajesh Memorial Welfare Society on Monday handed over the bus-queue shelter which it had constructed to the management of the local Giani Zail Singh Engineering College. The shelter was inaugurated by the college Principal, Mr Naginder Singh.

FAZILKA
Dowry death:
Prem Joyia, resident of Patiala, in an FIR lodged with the city police on Sunday alleged that his newly wed sister, Savitri (22) of Gandhi Nagar locality here was burnt to death on Saturday evening. According to the FIR, in-laws of Savitri who was married to Krishan Lal in March 1998, were maltreating her for allegedly bringing less dowry. The police has registered a case under Section 304 IPC against Krishan Lal, her mother Kasturi Devi, and brother Tirlok Chand. All of them are at large.

GURDASPUR
Held on rape charge:
The Qadian police on Sunday arrested Kashmir Singh Rajpoot, former President of the BJP Mandal, Qadian, on the charge of raping a woman of Navrana village who was his employee at a PCO at Qadian. According to the DSP, Qadian, he forcibly got a written statement from her stating that she had an illicit relations with her cousin Balwinder Singh. A case has been registered.

KHARAR
Demanded:
The Sarpanch of nearby Sacrulapur village in a press note issued here on Monday demanded that the Punjab Government should order the repair of a portion of about 800-900 feet of main road opposite government school in the village.
Contaminated water:
Mrs Baldev Kaur, Sarpanch of nearby Jakar Majra village in a press note issued here on Monday has alleged that residents of the village were forced to drink contaminated water and the administration was not bothering about this in spite of repeated requests. She has demanded that the government should made arrangement of drinking water supply through a pipeline.

MOGA
One killed:
An unidentified person was killed when he was run over by a vehicle on the Moga bypass on the night of Sunday. Four persons have lost their lives in accidents near Moga in a day. Traffic congestion was reported to be the cause of these accidents.
Power cut: Prolonged power cuts here have caused resentment among local residents. According to reports, there was no electricity in the town between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for the last fortnight Industrialists allege that they were the worst affected.
Land restored: A piece of land in Langena village under Baghapurana police station in the district, which was being used by Muslims for burying their dead and had been reportedly grabbed by certain influential persons illegally a few days ago, has been restored to them, according to an official report available here on Monday.
Brahmin Sabha: Mr Satinder Sharma and Mr Pawan Sharma have been elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Moga District Brahmin Sabha.

NAWANSHAHR
Residents harassed:
Local residents are not getting cooking gas cylinders for the past one week as the Friends Gas Agency has suspended the supply of gas cylinders. Mr Kamalkant Barthwal, President, Nagrik Hitkarini Sabha, has urged the administration to take steps to restore the supply.

NANGAL
March:
The local unit of SAD (Badal) on Sunday organised a Khalsa march as a part of tercentenary celebrations. The march started from Gurdwara Bhabhar Sahib in Nangal and ended at Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur. Langar, boarding and lodging facilities have been made for pilgrims coming from other countries at Nangal, the president of the local party unit said.

PATIALA
Urged:
The local units of the Garhwali Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab, and the Pauri Garhwal Sabha on Sunday urged the Uttar Pradesh Government to help families affected by earthquake.
Kisan mela:
A kisan mela will be held at Rakhra near here on April 18 under the aegis of the Punjab Young Farmers Association. Seeds of high-yielding PUSA-44 variety of paddy and PUSA-Basmati-1 will be distributed among members.

Fake dollars:
The police busted a gang of persons selling fake dollars by arresting Satinder Singh, resident of Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana on Sunday. Fake 9000 Canadian dollars were recovered from his possession.

Members of the Electricity Streetlight Employees and Workers Union held a gate rally on Monday in support of their demands. They were agitating against the break in services of employees on muster roll and daily wages in the electricity wing of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC). They demanded the regularisation of the services of these workers by creating additional posts.

AMBALA
Killed: Mr Kishan Lal Suri, a resident of Durganagar, was killed when he was hit by a Maruti car on Sunday. He was sleeping outside his house at the time of the incident.

FARIDABAD
Three arrested:
With the arrest of three youths, the police claims to have solved the murder case of a chowkidar in a factory. A police spokesman said on Sunday that the culprits — Shashi, Sunil and Lokesh — had admitted their crime and the motive behind this murder was their unsuccessful attempt to loot the cash amount from the factory.
Bail granted:
An interim bail was granted to two advocates — L.N. Prashar and Rajkumar by Additional District and Sessions Judge, P.I. Goyal on Saturday. A case was registered against them for beating up government advocates, during a discussion of a case in the court of Judge K.C. Gupta on March 22.

FATEHABAD
Annual function:
The annual function of the local Green Valley Public School was held here on Sunday. The Principal, Mrs Dimple Munjal read out the annual report. Philanthropist Mr Dev Raj Batra presided over the function.

ROHTAK
Abducted:
A 12-year-old minor girl has been allegedly abducted by two youths from Katchi Garhi locality in the town. According to the report lodged by Ms Bimla Devi, her daughter was allegedly abducted by Talak and Naresh of the same colony on March 26.

SIRSA
Wife's complaint:
Rajender Kaur of Sindhpura village in a complaint lodged with the police has accused her husband of beating her up and demanding a car as dowry on the instigation from his family members. She was married to Balwinder Singh of Sukhchain village over three months ago. Balwinder Singh has been arrested and a case has been registered against him and his family members under Sections 498-A, 406, 504 and 506.
Booked: Bagger Singh of Moriwal village has been booked for growing poppy in his fields, a police report said. He is reported to have absconded.

SONEPAT
5 booked:
The police has registered a case against five persons, including three members of a family, in connection with the murder of Mr Joginder Singh Sangwan, alias Pappoo, former President of the Janata Vidya Bhawan, Butana, at Nuran Khera village in the Gohana sub-division of Sonepat district on Saturday night.

CHAMBA
Utsav planned:
A three-day "Churah utsav" will be held from May 1 at Bhanjraru, the subdivisional headquarter of Churah subdivision in Chamba district. According to Mr K. Sanjaymurthy, Deputy Commissioner of Chamba, folklores would be highlighted by organising cultural shows.

HAMIRPUR
Memorandum given:
The Himachal Pradesh unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party has alleged that the state government has failed to give justice to the Dalits and other backward classes. Mr P.C. Azad, General Secretary of the party said on Sunday that the party had submitted a memorandum to the state government listing a number of irregularities being committed by the government.
Mahila morcha:
At least 80 members of the Janbadi Mahila Morcha forced a liquor shop owner to close down his shop at Kohla village, about 6 km from here. Ms Satya Galodha, the General Secretary of the state unit of the morcha, said here on Sunday that if the district administration insisted on the opening of the liquor shop, the morcha would launch an indefinite agitation.
