Labour trouble: The elected municipal
councillors on Monday appealed to the management
of the OCM Woollen Mills, Chheharta, to reinstate
all workers at the earliest. They also appealed
to the Punjab Government to intervene and get the
dispute settled. The signatories to the statement

Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded the
installation of Internet access server in the
'holy' city. In a letter to the Chairman, Vidhesh
Sanchar Nigam Limited, the Manch General
Secretary, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, stated
that presently the server at Jalandhar was
catering to Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.
This was resulting in frequent disconnection. A
separate Internet access server was the only
remedy, he emphasised.
FARIDKOT
Medical college function: A two-day
state-level Trob-'99 organised by the local Guru
Gobind Singh Medical College began here on
Tuesday. More than 150 delegates from different
dental and medical institutions are participating
in it. Dr L.S. Chawla, Vice-Chancellor, Baba
Farid Medical and Health Sciences University,
Faridkot, inaugurated.
Dental
camp: More than 4000 patients were
examined free of cost in a two-day dental check
up camp organised by Dashmesh Dental College,
Faridkot, which concluded here on Tuesday.
According to Dr Manohar Singh, Principal of the
institution, nearly 2500 persons who got their
names registered will be given further treatment
and other basic facilities free of cost.
HOSHIARPUR
Pensioners protest: Pensioners here
staged a dharna for the five day delay in the
release of their pensions for March. Later the
Deputy Commissioner, Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu,
directed the treasury officer to release the
pensions.
JALANDHAR
Wheat storage: As many as 12 lakh bags
out of 14.5 quintal of last year's crop are still
lying here with the procurement agencies.
According to an estimate of the Secretary of the
Local Market Committee, about 15 lakh bags of
wheat are expected here this season. However the
total space available with all the agencies is
for 10 lakh bags.

Meeting: The annual meeting of the
Punjab Khatri Sabha was held here on Monday. It
was presided over by its district President
Bodhraj Majithia. Mr K.K. Puri, President, All
Punjab Khatri Sabha, spoke. They urged the
participants to fight against evils like dowry.
NAWANSHAHR
Power cuts: Two-hour power cut twice or
thrice a day affects water supply in the town as
there are no water storage tanks in the town. The
power cuts will continue up to Friday, say PSEB
officials.
Patwaris'
stir: The district unit of the Revenue
Patwari Union has started an indefinite dharna
here in front of the office of the Deputy
Commissioner in support of their demands which
include contingency grant for electricity and
water bills of patwarkhanas; salary for safai
sewaks, appointment of bill clerks, filling of
vacant posts of kanugos and reinstatement of
suspended patwaris.

Victimisation condemned: The Free
Thinkers Forum (FTF) of Punjabi University at an
emergency meeting under the chairmanship of Prof.
B.S. Mangat here on Monday condemned alleged
anti-teachers' activities on the campus. Among
those who attended the meeting included Prof. S.S
Joshi and Prof B.S Nanda, Prof K.S Sidhu, Dr
Sunita Dhir, all former PUTA office-bearers, Prof
B.S Khaira, Prof H.C Rajpal and Dr B.S Mann.
Grant: Finance
Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh has announced a
grant of Rs 2 lakh for Nabha Sahib village. This
money would be used for recarpeting roads of
Harijan basti and brick-lining of the drains. He
said this after presenting awards to winners at a
three-day rural sports festival held here on
Monday.
Marriages:
The Public Welfare Society, organised two
marriages here on Monday at Amar Ashram. Both the
brides and grooms are real sisters and real
brothers, respectively. Among those who blessed
the newly weds was Mr Parampal Singh Sidhu, SSP,
Patiala.
SANGRUR
Sangat darshan: A 'sangat darshan'
programme was organised here on Monday. Mr
Anirudh Tewari, the Deputy Commissioner, presided
over the programme which was attended by the
heads of various departments. Of the 10
complaints received on the occasion, as many as
eight were redressed on the spot. The Deputy
Commissioner directed the heads of the
departments to solve the remaining complaints
within a fortnight.
