Labour trouble:
The elected municipal councillors on Monday appealed to the management of the OCM Woollen Mills, Chheharta, to reinstate all workers at the earliest. They also appealed to the Punjab Government to intervene and get the dispute settled. The signatories to the statement included Sawinder Singh. Rajpal Chadha, Sunil Dutta, Premwanti, Parminder Singh Tung, Gurpartap Singh Tikka, Tarsem Singh, Bhparveen Kaur, Surjit Singh Silja, Om Parkash Gaber, Parkash Kaur, Jaspal Singh Kapoor, Rakesh Mehra, Baldev Singh, Raj Kumar Aggarwal, Surrinder Kumar Sharma, Bhupinderjit Kaur, Inderjit Sharma, Madan Lal Aneja, Surjit Singh Gill, Surrinder Kumar, Avinash Jolly, Surrinder Singh, Dharamvir Sarin and Ashok Chaudhary.

Vikas manch: The Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded the installation of Internet access server in the 'holy' city. In a letter to the Chairman, Vidhesh Sanchar Nigam Limited, the Manch General Secretary, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, stated that presently the server at Jalandhar was catering to Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. This was resulting in frequent disconnection. A separate Internet access server was the only remedy, he emphasised.

FARIDKOT
Medical college function:
A two-day state-level Trob-'99 organised by the local Guru Gobind Singh Medical College began here on Tuesday. More than 150 delegates from different dental and medical institutions are participating in it. Dr L.S. Chawla, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid Medical and Health Sciences University, Faridkot, inaugurated.

Dental camp: More than 4000 patients were examined free of cost in a two-day dental check up camp organised by Dashmesh Dental College, Faridkot, which concluded here on Tuesday. According to Dr Manohar Singh, Principal of the institution, nearly 2500 persons who got their names registered will be given further treatment and other basic facilities free of cost.

HOSHIARPUR
Pensioners protest:
Pensioners here staged a dharna for the five day delay in the release of their pensions for March. Later the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, directed the treasury officer to release the pensions.

JALANDHAR
Wheat storage:
As many as 12 lakh bags out of 14.5 quintal of last year's crop are still lying here with the procurement agencies. According to an estimate of the Secretary of the Local Market Committee, about 15 lakh bags of wheat are expected here this season. However the total space available with all the agencies is for 10 lakh bags.

MOGA
Meeting:
The annual meeting of the Punjab Khatri Sabha was held here on Monday. It was presided over by its district President Bodhraj Majithia. Mr K.K. Puri, President, All Punjab Khatri Sabha, spoke. They urged the participants to fight against evils like dowry.

NAWANSHAHR
Power cuts:
Two-hour power cut twice or thrice a day affects water supply in the town as there are no water storage tanks in the town. The power cuts will continue up to Friday, say PSEB officials.

Patwaris' stir: The district unit of the Revenue Patwari Union has started an indefinite dharna here in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in support of their demands which include contingency grant for electricity and water bills of patwarkhanas; salary for safai sewaks, appointment of bill clerks, filling of vacant posts of kanugos and reinstatement of suspended patwaris.

Victimisation condemned:
The Free Thinkers Forum (FTF) of Punjabi University at an emergency meeting under the chairmanship of Prof. B.S. Mangat here on Monday condemned alleged anti-teachers' activities on the campus. Among those who attended the meeting included Prof. S.S Joshi and Prof B.S Nanda, Prof K.S Sidhu, Dr Sunita Dhir, all former PUTA office-bearers, Prof B.S Khaira, Prof H.C Rajpal and Dr B.S Mann.

Grant: Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh has announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for Nabha Sahib village. This money would be used for recarpeting roads of Harijan basti and brick-lining of the drains. He said this after presenting awards to winners at a three-day rural sports festival held here on Monday.

Marriages: The Public Welfare Society, organised two marriages here on Monday at Amar Ashram. Both the brides and grooms are real sisters and real brothers, respectively. Among those who blessed the newly weds was Mr Parampal Singh Sidhu, SSP, Patiala.

SANGRUR
Sangat darshan:
A 'sangat darshan' programme was organised here on Monday. Mr Anirudh Tewari, the Deputy Commissioner, presided over the programme which was attended by the heads of various departments. Of the 10 complaints received on the occasion, as many as eight were redressed on the spot. The Deputy Commissioner directed the heads of the departments to solve the remaining complaints within a fortnight.

Formed: The Uttrakhand Kalyan Parishad on Tuesday decided to set up a relief fund for the earthquake victims of the Garhwal region, a press note said.

Nominated: Mr Satinder Singh, President of the local unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, has nominated the following as office-bearers of the Chandigarh District II: Vice-Presidents — Mr Munish Nanda, Mr Ramesh Duggal and Mr Shailendar; General Secretary — Mr Baldev Singh; and secretaries — Ms Sunita Raina, Mr Sanjay Sharma and Mr Rajesh Rawat.

Training programme: A trainer development programme being conducted by the India Tourism Human Resource Development Committee began on Tuesday, at the Food Craft Institute, Sector 42. While inaugurating the programme, the Principal of the institute, Mr Alok Shivapuri introduced to the participants, Mrs Geetanjali Dhar, the training consultant from Delhi, who will conduct various sessions. As many as 15 participants from CITCO, Chandigarh Tourism, Food Craft Institute and local hotels will participate in this programme. The programme will conclude on April 10. It will equip the participants with the skills required to train entry-level staff.

AMBALA
CBI probe demanded:
The President Indian National Lok Dal (youth wing), Mr Ajay Chautala, on Monday demanded a CBI probe into the incidents at Maintresham village in Hisar district. Addressing a press conference here, Mr Chautala said innocent persons had been booked in order to shield the accused.

Cruelty to animals: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: President — Mr Ashok Sharma, Senior Vice-President — Mr Ashwani Sharma, Junior Vice-President — Dr K.G Gupta, General Secretary — Mr C.L Khera, Joint Secretary — Mr S.K Sharma and Treasurer — Mr Ramesh Chand Sharma.

Expedition: A cycle expedition was organised by 144 A.D. Regiment to mark its golden jubilee. It started from Nasirabad and concluded at the Cantonment here on Monday. The expedition, which passed through Kota, Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra was received by Brig A.K. Ashtana, the Army spokesman said.

Voter's list:
The District Election Officer said here on Monday that the publication of voter's list would be undertaken from April 30. Objections and claims would be received by Election Registration Officers from April 20 to May 20 which would be examined by June 21. The final list would be out on July 21.

PANIPAT
Rape case:
The Panipat police claims to have solved a case of rape of a 10-year-old girl of ward 11 here with the arrest of Avdhesh Kumar, alias Ajay, a resident of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. Mr Manoj Yadav, the district police chief, said on Tuesday that the incident happened on March 20, 1999. The girl has identified the suspect, Mr Yadav added.

Memorandum: A delegation of the Berozgari Hatao Kshetra Bachao Andolan Samiti, along with MPs will summit a memorandum to Union Petroleum Minister demanding jobs for New Beholi village residents in the Panipat Oil Refinery as their lands had been acquired for setting up of the refinery. The decision was taken at a ‘mahapanchayat’, held at the village on Monday.

Compensation awarded: The District Consumers' Forum has directed the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to allot a new plot in lieu of an old one and pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 to Ms Jaswanti Malik, a resident of Sonepat. According to sources, Ms Malik, filed a complaint with the District Consumers Forum that she was allotted a six marla plot in Sector 13 in Panipat. After the allotment, she found that the plot was disputed. She made a representation to HUDA, but to no avail. She, then filed a complaint with the District Consumers Forum under Section 12 of the Consumers' Protection Act on December 2, 1998, demanding allotment of a new plot and a compensation of Rs 5000.

Open darbar:
In an open darbar held here at the local Patwar Bhavan, the ADC, Sirsa, Mr Arun Gupta, heard and settled 66 complaints. He also asked the officers to work for strengthening the faith of people in the government.

SONEPAT
Milk price:
The dairy owners of this city on Monday raised the price of milk from Rs 17 per litre to Rs 18. This has caused resentment among the residents of the city.
