ANANDPUR SAHIB
Liquor seized:
The Excise and Taxation Department has seized 816 bottles of country-made liquor from Raghbir Singh and Ram Kishan at Nangal. Mr Jarnail Singh, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Ropar, said these bottles were being carried in a jeep. A case has been registered under the Excise Act.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Elected:
Ms Neelam Mukhiya, municipal councillor, was elected Vice-President of the council at a meeting held here on Monday. She belongs to the group of the Mr Rajesh Pal Singh Lalli, who is a senior SAD (B) leader.

JALANDHAR
Anniversary:
A Punjabi musical play "Salvaan" was staged at the Lions Bhavan here on Sunday to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the National Theatre Arts Society. Mr B.S. Patter, Senior Engineer (Operation), Punjab State Electricity Board was the chief guest.

KHARAR
Baisakhi mela:
The three-day long Lions Baisakhi mela to mark the tercentenary year of the Khalsa concluded here on Sunday. Inter-school competitions, fancy dress competitions, a baby show, and a cultural programme were held.

LUDHIANA
Dharna:
The Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal has decided to stage a dharna at the Clock Tower chowk here on April 19 to protest against the state government's decision of not withdrawing the hike in sales tax. The decision was taken at a meeting of the steering committee of the mandal held here.
Seminar:
A Neurotrauma Update-1999 was organised by the Department of Neurosurgery, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on Saturday. It was inaugurated by Dr V.K. Kak, Director and Principal of Government Medical College, Chandigarh.

NURPUR
Arrested:
The Jawali police has arrested Tilakraj from Mukerian, Punjab, on Sunday for allegedly stealing a truck from Sunhara village near Fatehpur. A case under Sections 396 and 34, IPC, has been registered.

PATIALA
Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local branch of the Indian Medical Association: President — Dr Manmohan Singh; Vice-Presidents — Dr Adarsh Chopra and Dr NML Tandon; Honorary Secretary — Dr H.S. Wealthy; Honorary Finance Secretary — Dr Naresh Garg; and Honorary Joint Secretaries — Dr Kulbir Kaur Walia and Dr J.K. Pahuja.
Camp:
Nearly 470 patients were examined and nine were operated on at a free eye check-up and operation camp which was organised by the Local Citizens Welfare Society, Tripuri, here on Sunday at Dharamsala Santoshi Mata Mandir. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Brahm Mohindra, former Punjab minister.

Urged: The local unit of the Hindu Parv Mahasabha has urged all people to celebrate Baisakhi on Wednesday and follow the teachings of the Gurus who made supreme sacrifices in upholding their beliefs even in the face of adversities. Mr B.P. Arora, General Secretary of the organisation, said that more and more people should join the festivities, being organised on the historic occasion.

BHIWANI
Rape:
Ved Kaur, a widow at Jui village, alleged in an affidavit here on Monday that three youths of her village raped her minor daughter on March 6 when she had gone to collect fodder. A case had been registered under Sections 342 and 376, IPC, but now she said undue pressure was being mounted on her to withdraw the case. She sought the arrest of the culprits.
Memorandum:
The District Congress Committee has submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the Deputy Commissioner here for constituting a joint parliamentary committee to probe the allegations levelled by Mr Mohan Guruswamy, a former adviser to the Union Finance Minister, regarding corruption in high places and the unconstitutional sack of former Navy chief Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat.
Foundation stone:
Mr Surendra Singh, MP and General Secretary, Haryana Vikas Party, will lay the foundation stone of a hall at the Bhim Stadium here on Wednesday. This was stated by Mr K.S. Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, here on Monday.
Lok Adalat:
Nearly 258 cases of different categories were settled at a Lok Adalat held here on the premises of the judicial courts. Mr Pritam Pal, District and Sessions Judge, here, presided.

Eye operation camp:
A six-day free eye operation camp was organised recently by the Health and Vision Society at Gandhra village. A free eye operation theatre at the village was also inaugurated by Dr Archana Kumar, an eye surgeon.

SIRSA
Remanded:
The Additional Judicial Magistrate here has remanded Mohan Lal and Ram Swarup, along with seven others, in judicial custody up to April 21. These men were arrested under Sections 376, 326, 323,342,506, and 34, IPC, in connection with a rape case.
Open darbar:
Nearly 46 complaints were disposed of at the weekly open darbar held here on Monday. Mr Arun Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner, presided.
1 killed:
Rajinder of Dabwali was killed and four others seriously injured when their car overturned near Pathralla village, 60 km from here, on Sunday.

SONEPAT
Transfer sought:
The Sonepat Citizens Council on Sunday urged the Deputy Commissioner to order the transfer of a clerk at the SDM's office here and a high-level probe into public complaints against him. People allege that they were being harassed on one pretext or the other and the licensing clerk most of the time remained absent from duty.

YAMUNANAGAR
Salaries not paid:
Resentment prevails among teachers of Haryana Aided Colleges who have not been given salaries since January. Prof Harbhajan Singh, former president, Haryana College Teachers Union, said here on Monday that deputations of teachers had met the Chief Minister, Education Minister and Director, Higher Education, but nothing had been done so far.

Protest dharna:
Seven leaders of the Deputy Commissioner's Office Employees Association staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday. They were seeking the implementation of their demands.

SOLAN
1 held:
The police arrested Vidya Sagar, a steno-typist of the Bilaspur Cooperative and Marketing Committee, on the charges of impersonating and cheating near Navgaon on the Navgaon-Darlaghat road, 70 km from here, on Sunday. He was allegedly extorting money from passing vehicles by posing as an inspector of the Excise and Taxation Department.
