The prices of most vegetables have recorded a
sharp hike in the local market during the past 24 hours.
A survey of the market
today revealed that cauliflower, cabbage and peas have
witnessed about a two-fold hike in their prices during
this period.
If a kg of cauliflower
was available for Rs 5 in the Sector 46 Apni Mandi
yesterday, it was priced today at Rs 10 in Sector
markets. The wholesale price of the vegetable has also
jumped from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per 5 kg during this period.
The hike in the case of
cabbage was even more: a kg of the vegetable, priced
between Rs 3 and Rs 4 yesterday, was available today for
Rs 8 in different city markets.
According to traders,
the prices have risen due to a steep shortfall in
arrivals from the surrounding areas of Punjab and
Haryana.
Similarly, the hike was
also noticeable in case of peas. A kg of the 'pahari'
variety which was available for between Rs 20 and Rs 24
yesterday, could be purchased today for Rs 32.
The wholesale price of
the vegetable has also gone up from Rs 90 to Rs 140 per 5
kg during this period. "In fact, during the past two
days, there have been very little arrivals of the
vegetable from different parts of Himachal Pradesh, from
where the vegetable has been coming from after the
arrivals of local variety had stopped during the last
week of March," said a trader.
Beans, the price of
which had remained almost stable between Rs 12 and Rs 15
a kg, during the past month, too, has jumped
considerably. These were priced in the market today at Rs
20 per kg. Enquiries revealed that like most other
vegetables, the arrivals of beans too were below normal.
On the other hand,
capsicum and tomato have become cheaper during this
period. A kg of capsicum, price between Rs 80 and Rs 100
yesterday, was available for Rs 48 today. The wholesale
price of the vegetable has decreased from Rs 400 to Rs
200 per 5 kg during this period.
If a kg of tomato was
priced at Rs 16 yesterday, it was available today between
Rs 10 and Rs 12. According to traders, the wholesale
price of the vegetable has decreased from Rs 60 to Rs 45
today. They attributed the fluctuation to increasing
arrivals from different parts of Punjab.
