AMRITSAR
Postponed:
Mr Kirpal Singh Randhawa, Deputy Chairman, of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation, has decided to postpone his decision to observe indefinite fast in front of Deputy Commissioner's office from Tuesday. He said the decision had been taken on the directive of Mr Ajit Singh Bains, chairman of the organisation. The new date for the fast in support of his demands would be announced shortly.

BATHINDA
Grant:
The Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the Sanskrit Educational Institution and temple sarovar at Misarkhana village. Mr Badal made this announcement while presiding over a state-level function organised in connection with the Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti at the village on Sunday.

FEROZEPORE
Camp:
A four-day free eye-cum-medical camp organised by the Golden Arrow Division at Hussainiwala concluded on Monday. The camp was inaugurated by Lieut-Gen Kamal Davar, GOC, Vajra Corps. As many as 3,500 patients were examined and 38 eye operations were carried out.

GURDASPUR
Busted:
The police busted an inter-state gang engaged in the sale of forged licenses and registration certificates of vehicles on Monday. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, a police party raided a house on the bank of Chakki river near Pathankot and arrested Dharamvir, Manohar Lal Sharma, Gurbachan Singh, Kishori Lal, a resident of Kalari in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh.

HOSHIARPUR
Road repair:
Mr G.S. Sodhi, Chief Engineer, PWD(B&R), Punjab, said here on Sunday that repair work for a 5,000-km stretch of roads would be completed in the current financial year. This would cost Rs 165 crore. He said sanction for the construction of a bridge on Jamanwala Choe on Hoshiarpur-Una road was being accorded. Referring to the payments of arrears to contractors he said the payment would be cleared soon.

KHARAR
Urged:
Mr K.K Sharma, president of the local Citizen Welfare Council, has alleged that some persons have encroached upon the municipal land in the town. Some of them have set up shops in residential houses and are using the municipal land to keep their items. This has created traffic problems in the area. He has urged the officers concerned to take necessary steps in this regard.
Rotary club: Mr Amarjit Singh Dhindsa, new SDM of Kharar, was inducted as honorary member of the Rotary Club here at a function held on Monday.

MALERKOTLA
Fire:
The saw mill of Mohammad Ramjan at the Jarg road here was completely destroyed in a fire here on Monday. Fire engines were summoned from Sangrur, Barnala and Ludhiana but the fire was put off before the engines arrived. The cause of the fire is stated to be electrical short-circuit.

MOGA
Stray cattle:
Stray cattle here is a nuisance in the town. According to reports, stray cattle can be spotted on the main road crossing on the Ludhiana-Ferozepore road, near the residence of the Deputy Commissioner. Though the local administration had directed the municipal authorities to deal with the menace, nothing has been done so far. Transporters are the worst affected as the cattle blocks the main road.

PATIALA
Lok darbar:
As many as five out of 20 complaints received at a lok darbar held here by the district administration on Monday were redressed on the spot. Presiding over the lok darbar the Additional Development Commissioner ( Development), Mr Gagandeep Singh, directed officials concerned to look into the complaints, which were not redressed on the spot, within a definite time frame.

Condemned: The Punjab and Union Territory Employees Joint Action Committee on Monday condemned the reported decisions of the state government to increase tuition fee in professional colleges and increase in charges for availing treatment through government-run hospitals and dispensaries. The general secretary of the committee, Mr Darshan Singh Lubana, urged the government to withdraw the hike.

Baisakhi mela: The local Maharani Ladies Club organised a Baisakhi mela and sports day here on Sunday. Ms Shubhnit Sodhi was declared 'Baisakhi Queen' at the mela.

PHILLAUR
Arrested:
The police has arrested two persons Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukhi and Jawahar Lal, and seized two pistols from them. The DSP, Mr Upinderjit Singh Ghuman, said here on Monday that the police had launched a special drive against anti-social elements in the area.

Delegation: A delegation of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Welfare Society submitted a memorandum of its demands to the Adviser to the Administrator here on Tuesday. The demands included issuance of SC/ST certificates from the Estate Office and identity cards to roadside vendors.

BHIWANI
Open darbar:
Mr K.S. Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, listened to the grievances of the people at the weekly open darbar held here on Tuesday in the Panchayat Bhavan. Nearly 350 persons appeared at the darbar with their individual and common complaints. Most of the complaints were redressed on the spot. The Deputy Commissioner asked the district officials to see to it that people were not inconvenienced. The complaints ranged from the issuance of wrong electricity bills to lack of drinking water in some villages and encroachments on panchayat land.

Eye camps: Under the National Blindness Eradication Programme, eight eye treatment camps will be held in the district at various places. The camp will be held at Loharu village on April 21-22, Kharak Kalan on April 23-24, Miran on April 26-27, Gopi on April 27-28, Kairu on April 28-29 and on April 29-30 at Sanward village.

Re-exam: Principal of the Vaish Post Graduate College here notified on Tuesday that re-examination of English Paper 'A' of B.A. Part I examination of the regular as well as of Distance Education will be held on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 12.00 noon at the following centres. The students of Centre Number 108 and 110 will appear at the same centres in Vaish College. The students of Centre Number 107 and 109 will appear in Centre Number 111 and 112, respectively, at Government College here.

FARIDABAD
TB cases:
Over 50 cases of tuberculosis of the lungs were detected at a free check-up camp organised at Dayalnagar, near here on Sunday. Most of the patients were workers engaged in the mining of silica, sand and stones in the Surajkund area here. The camp, which was inaugurated by Subedar Suman, Mayor, had been organised jointly by the Municipal Corporation, Dr Vidya Sagar Hospital, TB Association and the local Civil Hospital. A large number of labourers were also found to be suffering from acute asthma.

FATEHABAD
Bar Association:
Mr Darshan Dass Verma has been elected president of the District Bar Association. Mr Dushyant Gera has been elected secretary of the association.

ROHTAK
Blood donation:
As many as 60 units of blood was donated at a camp organised by the personal banking branch of the State Bank of India at Patel Nagar here on Sunday. The Chief Manager of the bank gave away mementoes to the donors.

Honoured: Mr G.P Chopra, vice-president of the DAV College Managing Committee, was honoured by the Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Upsabha on being awarded "Padamshree" by the President. The upsabha and the DAV Centenary Public School here celebrated the Mahatma Hansraj Day on Sunday. Rich tributes were paid to the mahatma and his contribution to the spread of education was highlighted by various speakers.

Arrested: Rakesh Kumar alias Banti and his mother Sohna Devi involved in a murder of Madan Lal were arrested by Sirsa police on Monday. Mr B.S Sandhu, the SSP, said here on Tuesday that the victim along with his associates visited the house of the accused on April 14 and got involved in a scuffle. On being provoked by his mother, Rakesh seriously injured Madan with a sharp edged weapon. Madan Lal succumbed to his injuries in a Civil Hospital, here. The cause of the dispute was stated to be money.

Thief held: The Dabwali police has arrested Narinder Kumar Kamboj of Matdadu village on the charge of theft. According to Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, Sirsa, the accused had stolen electric wire worth Rs 5,000, ten years ago.

One held: Krishan Kumar Kamboj, a resident of Mangala village in the district was arrested by police here in a criminal case registered against him. Mr Harbans Lal, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School at the village had alleged in a complaint that the accused had come to the school on April 15 and stopped him from discharging his duty and had a scuffle with him.

SONEPAT
Case registered:
The Gohana police has registered a case under Sections 302/34 of the IPC against three persons, including a woman, in connection with the alleged murder of Bhagat Singh, a resident of Shamri village in the district. The culprits have been identified as Jai Bhagwan, a CRPF jawan, his wife Chando and his son Prem Singh. The case was registered after an FIR was lodged with the police by Mr Maha Singh, father of the victim.

YAMUNANAGAR
Teenagers arrested:
The local police arrested two teenagers on Monday who allegedly raped a nine-year-old deaf and dumb girl. Mr K.K. Sindhu, SP, said Desh Raj, father of the victim, who lives in Rampur Raiyan village, had lodged a complaint with the Sadhoura police station, alleging that Iqbal and Rajbir studying in classes VII and VIII respectively, had raped his daughter when she was on her way to purchase milk.

Deputation: A deputation of the HP State DC Office Employees Union on Tuesday met the Divisional Commissioner (Mandi), Mr S. Roy and discussed their demand. They decided to postpone their agitation till April 30. In a signed statement issued to the press here on Tuesday Mr J.N. Sharma Chairman of the union assured them of their demands.

Environment: Mr Subhash Chaudhry, Environment and Wild Life Minister, Haryana has suggested that the technical experts and the central government would try to invent the new technique of smoke-less vehicle. Speaking at a function organised by the Haryana Environment Society at local Yoga Hall on Sunday he said that the people cut down trees in large number due to which environmental imbalance is created. Dr S.L Saini, the President of the Society said that they had planted 7000 trees in Yamunanagar in last three years. This year they will plant more than 3000 trees in Ambala and Kurukshetra districts. Mr Subhash Chaudhry announced a grant of Rs 31,000 for the Society.top

BILASPUR
Workshop:
The Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr Jagat Prakash Nadda, inaugurated a seven-day state-level workshop for nurses here on Tuesday at zonal hospital. He said that Rs 300 crore has been allocated to setup a State Health Services Development Corporation. He said that the Government has also decided to start a nursing training college at Reckong Peo in Kinnaur distt.

KULU
Water crisis:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr R.D Dhiman, held a meeting here on Saturday to work out strategy to deal with water crisis in the district in summer. He said adequate funds would be made available for augmentation of old drinking water schemes, commissioning of new ones and purification of traditional water sources to ensure sufficient and clean potable water to people all over the district. Mr Dhiman directed the officials of departments concerned, including IPH, BDO's, SDM's, CMO and all field functionaries to streamline all precautionary arrangements by the end of this month to ensure timely chlorination of water sources and proper supply of drinking water through tankers in areas facing water scarcity.

PALAMPUR
Forest fire:
A woman and a pair of bullocks perished in a forest fire at Kuwari village near Khundian, about 40 km from here. According to police, the forest fire near the village engulfed a cowshed belonging to Nikka Ram. His wife, Brahmi Devi, tried to save the bullocks tied in the cowshed, but was unable to come out and was charred to death along with the bullocks.
