UP rebels gun for CM again
LUCKNOW, April 28 (UNI) In a sudden change of
strategy, dissident legislators of the ruling BJP, who
had suspended their agitation to remove Chief Minister
Kalyan Singh during the political crisis at the Centre,
today brought back the issue to the fore. The dissidents
requested the party leadership to replace the Chief
Minister before the coming Lok Sabha elections,
"considering the fact that the BJP would not find it
easy to win its Lok Sabha seats in the state if Mr Kalyan
Singh was the leader of the state", they said.China-Russia pact
BEIJING, April 28 (AFP) China and Russia have
reached a breakthrough in talks to map out their common
border, ending a three-century-old dispute. A Russian
diplomat here said today. The two countries have resolved
the issue of who has sovereignty over 2.444 uninhabited
islands along the Amur river and other waterways which
separate their two vast territories to the east.
"The islands have been divided half and half in
number and in size, with 1.281 islands going to China and
1.163 to Russia", he said.
Taliban bombing
kills 30
KABUL, April 28 (AFP) At least 30 civilians have
died in bombing raids in Central and Northern Afghanistan
by the ruling Taliban militia, an opposition spokesman
said today. The hardline Islamic Taliban milita lost
control of central Bamiyan to the Hezb-i-Wahdat faction
of the northern alliance seven days ago and fighting has
since spread across Central Afghanistan.

put off
NEW DELHI, April 28 (PTI) Organisational elections
in the Congress have been postponed in view of the
mid-term polls following the dissolution of the Lok
Sabha, party spokesman Arjun Singh said today. However,
he said the enrolment of members will continue and the
last date for the enrolment is extended to May 31, 1999.

deadline
WASHINGTON, April 28 (PTI) US President Bill
Clinton has asked Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to
extend his decision of unilaterally declaring
independence on May 4, the deadline for final settlement,
by one year. Expressing support for Palestinians' right
to determine their own future as a free people on their
own land, Mr Clinton in his letter to Mr Arafat cautioned
him against such a course, the Washington Post reported
today.
12 Tigers killed
COLOMBO, April 28 (AFP) At least 12 Tamil Tiger
guerrillas were killed in a fresh wave of fighting with
government troops in northern Sri Lanka, the Defence
Ministry here said today. Troops opened fire with
automatic weapons at a group of rebels from the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the northern
peninsula of Jaffna, killing seven of them, including
three women, the ministry said. It said five more
guerrillas were shot dead by soldiers in three separate
clashes yesterday.
Black-necked
crane
GUWAHATI, April 28 (PTI) A new wintering site of
the black-necked crane, a globally endangered species,
has been found in Zemingthang valley of Tawang district
in Arunachal Pradesh by noted environmentalist Anwaruddin
Cuoudhury. "The birds are wintering in small numbers
in Zemingthang valley since time immemorial and the local
population all Buddhists belonging to the
Monpa tribes do not persecute it", the
environmentalist said. Choudhury said here today that
while on the trial of endangered Pere David's Macaque he
found the wintering site of the rare bird in Zemingthang
valley.

Fatima Beevi
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, April 28 (PTI) Tamil Nadu
Governor Justice Fatima Beevi has been selected for the
Raichal Thomas award for social and cultural works by
women for 1998. The award, consisted of Rs 10,000 and a
citation would be presented to her at a function to be
held here next month, a press release said here today.
