AMRITSAR
Elected:
Dr Kuldip Singh, senior lecturer of Political Science at Guru Nanak Dev University here, has been elected as member to the advisory committee for organising the International Political Science Association conference in Romania.

HOSHIARPUR
Rally:
The Christians Youth Front, Punjab, staged a rally in connection with "Apani Pehchan Banao" campaign at Green View Park here on Tuesday. Hundreds of Christians, including women and men from all over the district participated. Addressing the rally Mr Lawrance Chaudhary, president of the front, and many others criticised the political parties of the state for ignoring the Christian community.

Demand: Diploma Engineers of all boards and corporations in the state have demanded pension to the JEs on the Punjab Government parttern. Their meeting was held here under the presidentship of Mr Tara Singh Saini, president, Diploma Engineers' Association of PSTC on Tuesday. Mr Saini said the government had introduced pension scheme for the Municipal and Mandi Board employees and teachers of privately-managed recognised schools and colleges. But it had totally ignored the employees of boards and corporations. He urged the Chief Minister, Punjab, to immediately introduce pension scheme for these employees also.

JALANDHAR
Appointed:
Bhagat Manohar Lal has been appointed president of the BJP Anusuchit Jati Morcha, Jalandhar, by Mr Banwari Lal Chohan, president of the state unit of the morcha.

MALERKOTLA
Missing:
Ravia (10), daughter of Mohammad Khalid a local resident, has been missing since Monday. According to the father of the girl, Ravia had gone to school on Monday morning but did not return. The girl is a student of class V student at S.S. Jain Girls High School here.

NANGAL
New voters' lists:
The local unit of the Congress party has opposed the formation of new voters' lists for the Municipal Council election. The elections for the local Municipal Council are scheduled for November this year. Mr Ram Prakash Bali, ex-MLA and organising secretary of the PPCC, in a press conference held here alleged that the new lists were being made in spite of the fact that lists had been updated just two months ago for the Lok Sabha elections. He said the new lists were being made in spite of the Punjab Government notification that the lists prepared during the Assembly elections would be used for all official purposes.

TARN TARAN
Connections released:
The local circle of the PSEB has released 3750 temporary connections to the farmers of the area for irrigating the paddy crop and a revenue of Rs 1.13 crore has been recovered in favour of the board. This was stated by Mr R.S. Arneja, SE of the local PSEB circle. The SE said 24-hour power supply was being given to people in the border areas.

Shot dead: Mr Sawarn Singh (55), a farmer of Sarhali 19 km from here, was shot dead by three persons of the same village on Tuesday night. The suspects have been identified as Pala Singh, Gurjeet Singh and Harjeet Singh. A case has been registered against them under Sections 302 and 34, IPC.

Nominated: Mr Sampooran Singh Bakipur, member Zila Parishad, has been nominated member of the national Executive Committee of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal.

Inaugurated: Dr R.S. Bawa, Registrar Guru Nanak Dev University, inaugurated classes at the newly-established Mata Sahib Kaur Girls College, Fatehabad, on Monday. A large number of people, including sarpanches, panches and representatives of political parties, were present on the occasion. Baba Inderjit Singh, president of the managing committee of the college, thanked the guests for gracing the occasion.

Smack seized: Mr Surjit Singh, SSP said here on Tuesday that the police had launched a special campaign against drugs and at least 12 persons had been arrested during the month of July for possession smack and opium. Six grams of smack was seized from Gurnam Singh, alias Babbu, of Kakka Kandiala and Paramjit Singh, a resident of this town, was arrested with 75 mg of smack. Along with this 13.4 gm smack was seized from Naranjan Singh.top

Street play: Theatre Lab, Chandigarh, has announced that a street play, ‘Choona-Choona’, based on the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, will be staged in various parts of the city, starting from Thursday. According to the Secretary of the Theatre Lab, Mr Rajiv Mehta, the play has been designed to give a message to the audience that the man on the street need not fall prey to the evil designs of corrupt politicians.

PANCHKULA
Protest meeting:
The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) Joint Action Committee, Panchkula circle, held a collective meeting of all its allies, on Wednesday to protest against the HUDA’s indifferent attitude towards their demands. The HUDA Public Health Workers Union, HUDA Safai Workers Union, HUDA Mechanical Workers Union, and HUDA Electrical Workers Union were prominent at the meeting.

HISAR
Protest:
Village chowkidars of the district held a demonstration and staged a dharna in front of the mini secretariat here on Tuesday in support of their demand. They were demanding better pay-scales and other facilities as provided by the other states to chowkidars. The Haryana Gramin Chowkidars Sabha had given the call for staging dharnas at all district headquarters in the state. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the district administration for forwarding the same to the state government.

JIND
Banned:
The District Magistrate, Mr Tarun Bajaj, by an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has banned the carrying of any weapon like fire arms, swords, knives, bhalas, lathies and other weapons of offence by the public within the district. The step has been taken to ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of Lok Sabha elections. The order will remain in force till October, 20.

ROHTAK
Traders assured:
The state Town and Country Planning Minister, Mr Dheer Pal, has assured the traders of the state that their rights would be safeguarded and security would be provided to them by the state government. He was speaking at the civic reception accorded to him by the traders of the Vaish community here on Monday evening on taking over as the minister in the State Cabinet. He appealed to the traders to extend cooperation to the state government.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
The District Court has sentenced an opium smuggler to 10 year-old imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him. The additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr C.B. Jaglan, pronounced the sentence on Gurdev Singh of Taruana in the district. The accused was booked under Sections 17/18 and 95 of the Anti Drug Act after he was arrested by Kalanwali police with 1.8 kg of opium in October 1993.

Dharna: The labourers of the All-India Food and Allied Union staged a dharna outside the city police station on Tuesday. They were demanding immediate arrest of the persons who had beaten and injured several labourers in a union brawl about a fortnight back. One of the protesting labourers said they felt insecure when an innocent labourer was victimised and the culprits were not arrested because of their political clout.

SONEPAT
Body found:
The Ganaur police found body of an unidentified young woman from a deserted quarter of the Public Health Department at Lalehri village, about 15 km from here, on Tuesday. According to preliminary reports, the half-naked body of the woman bore some minor injuries and the police believe it to be case of murder. The police, however, did not confirm rape.

Strike called off: The indefinite strike by the members of the District Bar Association, was called off here on Tuesday and the striking lawyers resumed their duties after getting an assurance from the Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, that he would take action on the demands of the striking lawyers immediately.

Memorandum: Deaf and dumb children and their parents today sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Mr O.P. Chautala, demanding starting of classes up to class VIII at the Sharvan Viklang Kendra, Sonepat, to enable the deaf and dump children to carry on their studies after the passing the class VI examination.

Urged: The Haryana Valmiki Maha Sabha has urged the state government to order a fresh survey to identify persons living below the poverty line in the district and elsewhere in the state. A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister on Tuesday by the sabha. The memorandum also mentioned demands regarding the issuance of fresh ration cards to such persons as well as others belonging to the backward classes and weaker sections. The memorandum also demanded an allocation of Rs 2 lakh for the construction of memorials to the soldiers killed in the Operation Vijay.

YAMUNANAGAR
Impounded:
The local police has impounded a truck which was carrying cows to Uttar Pardesh. Mr Subash Goel, Secretary of the Gau Raksha Samiti said here on Tuesday that the truck (HNE-3481) was heading towards UP when the police impounded it near Bibi Pur Ghat. The police has arrested Rajesh, the driver of the truck and Rijwan, smuggler of cows.
