Election office:
The election office of Mr Jora Singh Mann, SAD-BJP candidate from Ferozepore was inaugurated here on Thursday by Mr Surjit Kumar Jyani, Minister of State for Rural Development and Panchayat.

Office-bearers:
The convener of the district unit of the Punjab Youth Congress, Mr Resham Singh Jaura, has announced the list of office-bearers of the district unit: vice-president — Mr Jarnail Singh (Khilchian), Mr Rajinder Kumar Chhabra (Talwandi Bhai), Mr Vinod Sharma (Ferozepore), Mr Hukam Chand Jossan (Jalalabad), Mr Kulbhushan Dhawan (Mallanwala), Mr Anish Bhandari (Abohar) and Mr Dinesh Gupta; and general secretaries — Mr Bhagwant Singh Gill (Jalalabad); Mr Hardeep Singh (Talwandi Bhai), Mr Sukhwant Singh Brar (Khipanwali), Mr Sarwan Singh and Mr Deepak Kumar Gumber (Ferozepore).

JALANDHAR
Condemn:
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions has condemned the indifferent attitude of the Punjab Government towards 1,000 workers rendered unemployed by International Tractors, Hoshiarpur, due to an illegal lockout on July 23. Mr Chander Shekhar, general secretary of the state committee of the CITU, in a press note here on Thursday demanded immediate lifting of the lockout.

LUDHIANA
One held:
The police has arrested Fateh Singh, a member of a gang involved in stealing cars and recovered one Maruti car from his possession. He was arrested near Bhagwan chowk.

Clarification: The Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal has denied that the candidature of a former Advocate-General, Mr Gurdarshan Singh Grewal was being re-examined. In a statement issued here on Thursday, the acting president of the SHSAD, Jathedar Surjan Singh Thekedar, asked Mr Kuldip Singh Wadala, chief SAD (Democratic), not to interfere in the affairs of the party.

PATIALA
Threat:
The local unit of the Punjab and Sind Bank Officers Federation on Thursday threatened to launch an agitation if "victimisation" of its employees was not stopped immediately. In a statement here, Mr Gurjit Singh, president of the local unit, said the association resented the "anti-employee and dictatorial" attitude of the Patiala Zonal Manager.

Demands: Engineers of the PSEB on Thursday criticised the non-implementation of their demands as agreed at various meetings held between the management and the association. The demands include promotion policy, finalisation of pay scales and allowances.

PUTA demands: A deputation of the Punjabi University Teachers Association met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and asked him to release arrears, raise retirement age to 62 and give one-time promotion from Reader to Professor on the pattern of Panjab University, according to the PUTA Joint Secretary, Mr Manjit Singh.
Fellowship: Dr Satnam Singh, Lecturer in Correspondence Department, Punjabi University, has been awarded a research fellowship by the University Grants Commission on 'Poetics of Comparative Literature'.

Appointment: Mr S.S Chauhan, Principal, Government College of Physical Education, has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Education, by Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University.

PHAGWARA
One killed:
Forty-year-old Surjit Kumar was killed when a tractor-trailer overturned near Baba Gadhia here on Thursday. The victim belonged to Jamalpur village.

PHILLAUR
Case registered:
The Goraya police has registered a case against Gurpreet, alias Rinku, under Sections 304 and 34, IPC, in connection with the death of their tenant, Om Parkash. Residents of Goraya blocked traffic on the G.T. road on Wednesday for more than three hours in protest against the incident and demanded the arrest of Inderjit and his son, Gurpreet.

NABHA
Competition:
The works of Pardeep Kaur and Ravinder Singh were adjudged best in an inter-class art competition organised by Punjab Public School, Nabha. The theme of the competition was "Kargil conflict and the victory of Indian forces." The second and third prizes were won by Rajat and Navdeep Singh, respectively.

Wheelchairs: The Chandigarh branch of the Physically Handicapped Association, Punjab, announced on Friday that it would donate more than 1,000 three-tier wheelchairs for the physically disabled on Sunday. Mr Balwant Singh Dardi, President of the branch, said any physically disabled person in need of a three-tier cycle could contact it at its office at Sco 2566, Dadu Majra. Colony.

Vidya kendra: Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, President, Kendriya Sri Guru Singh Sabha, has appointed Mr Amrinder Singh, member of the SGPC, incharge of the Chandigarh chapter of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Vidya Kendra. Mr Devinder Singh has been appointed Manager of the kendra.

Cinema hall: Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister of Punjab, will inaugurate a new cinema hall building on the Dera Bassi-Barwala road on Sunday at 9 am. Mr Vinod Khanna, cine star and former MP from Gurdaspur, will preside.

Haryana briefs
FATEHABAD
Case registered:
The police has registered criminal cases against 16 private typists at Tohana in this district for allegedly committing irregularities in vehicle registration, driving licences and permits. According to reports, the Bar Association, Tohana, had lodged a complaint with the police that these typists had been enclosing forged documents.

Sangh's decision: A meeting of the district unit of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh held here on Thursday decided not to participate in the proposed district-level rally on August 11. Representatives of the sangh from Bhuna, Rattia, Tohana, Fatehabad and Jakhar block participated.

One killed: A Bihari labourer was killed on Wednesday when the ceiling of a room caved in. The victim, Joga Singh, had been living in Bharpoor village, for the past three years.

HISAR
Sentenced:
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr P.L. Ahuja, on Thursday sentenced life imprisonment to Vikram, a resident of Kanuh village, for raping and murdering his sister. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000. In other case, the Additional District and Session Judge, Mr B.N Bedi, awarded 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh to Prem Singh for possessing heroin. The accused, a resident of Seinipura village, near Hansi, was arrested on July 24.

Strike: Students of Nehru Memorial College, Hansi, 26 km from here, held a protest here on Friday against the denial of admissions to failed students by the college authorities. The students raised anti-administration slogans.

JIND
Case registered:
The police has registered a case against Dalbir Singh, patwari, on a charge of misappropriating the War Heros' Relief Fund. According to a report, residents of Dhathrath village in this district had collected Rs 59,939 for the fund and gave the money to the patwari for depositing it in the relief fund. Instead of depositing the money, the patwari allegedly misappropriated the sum. Residents of Dhathrath and its surrounding villages on Wednesday blocked traffic on the Jind-Panipat road near Taloda Kheri village and demanded his arrest.

KARNAL
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Senior Citizen Council, Haryana: president — Mr M.R. Singla; secretary general — Mr S.B. Bhalla; and cashier — Mr S.S.Gill.

PANIPAT
Strike ends:
Seven of the 14 handloom units have called off their 10-day-old strike following a compromise with the management here on Wednesday. For other units, the Labour Officer has fixed August 9 for a compromise.

SIRSA
Electrocuted:
Rajinder Singh (36) of Kariwala village was electrocuted at Banni village in this district on Thursday. According to sources , he was electrocuted while repairing wires.

BILASPUR
SFI rally:
The SFI held a rally at Ghumarwin, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. They were demanding elections to the Students Central Association, withdrawal of the hike in fees and starting of NCC classes.

Threat by AVBP: The district unit of the ABVP has demanded arrest of culprits who attacked Mr Rakesh Thakur. Addressing rally here on Thursday, leaders alleged that a number of outsiders were staying in college hostel and the college authorities failed to take action against them.

KULU
One killed:
Vijay Ram (38) was crushed to death and three were injured when a mini truck hit them at Badah village, 3 km from here, on Thursday. The injured have been admitted to the local Zonal Hospital. Vijay was an Inspector in the Food and Civil Supplies Department at Kinnaur. A case under Sections 279, 337 304-A and 201, IPC, has been registered.

SHIMLA
