AMRITSAR
Two dead:
A 35-year-old woman identified as Jamuna Devi and a 26-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by throwing themselves before a train in Chhertta, a suburban of the city on Friday. A police report said here on Saturday that the two had known each other for quite sometime.

FARIDKOT
Appointed:
Mr Amardeep Singh Rai, IPS, has taken over as SSP, Faridkot. Earlier he was posted at Ludhiana as SP (city).

HOSHIARPUR
Father murdered:
Mr Harkanwal Singh was allegedly murdered by his son Bhupinder Singh at his residence in Bhajlan village on Friday. According to an FIR, lodged with the Garshankar police Bhupinder Singh who had twice failed to earn his livelihood in UK. compelled his father to give him money for going to UK again. On being refused he killed his father. A case has been registered under Section 302 of the IPC against the accused.

Ban on loud speakers: Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, District Magistrate, has prohibited the use of loud speakers under Section 144 Cr PC, till October 19. However, the candidates who are contesting Lok Sabha elections can obtain permission for its use from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. under the Punjab Instruments Act 1956, after depositing the required fee.

NAWANSHAHR
Printers and publishers:
Dr Roshan Sunkaria, District Magistrate, on Saturday issued an order prohibiting printers and publishers of the district from printing or publishing election pamphlets, posters and hand bills without their names on it, under Section 127-A of the Representation of People Act-1951. The printer will have to get a declaration duly witnessed by two persons from the publishers side and submit a copy of the signed declaration along with printed material in the office of the district magistrate within the stipulated period.

PHAGWARA
Two dead:
Madhu was crushed to death under a train here on Friday. A case under Section 174 of the Cr PC has been registered. In another incident a youth died when he too was run over by a train near Chaheru.

SAMANA
Salary clearance:
The local unit of the Government Teachers Union, Punjab, organised a rally in front of the treasury office here on Friday. They were protesting against the delay in the clearance of the salary and other bills pending in the office. They also submitted a memorandum to the SDM for forwarding it to the Punjab Government.

SANGRUR
Liquor vends:
The District Magistrate, Mr Anirudh Tewari, has ordered the closure of all liquor vends here from September 3 to 6 and from October 5 to 7, due to Lok Sabha elections.

Attacked: Dalip Kumar ( 30), a fisherman of Mandi Kalanwali was found in an unconscious condition from the bank of a canal on Friday by the Kalanwali police. According to informed sources he had injuries caused by a sharp edged weapon by some unidentified persons. His condition is stated to be stable.top

Medical camp: The Care Health Society and 127 Battalion, CRPF, Chandigarh, organised a free medical camp on the CRPF campus, Hallomajra, on Saturday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr A.S. Rathore, ADIG, North West Zone.

PANCHKULA
Meet:
The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Panchkula branch, conducted an interactive meet with parents and teachers on adolescent sexual and reproductive health needs at Bhavan Vidyalaya School in Sector 6 here on Saturday. The programme focused on the changing global scenario in sexual and health needs and stressed the importance for its timely communication. The programme was attended by 45 parents and teachers.

Acting course: The National Academy of Drama (NAD) will soon conduct courses in acting, modeling, music and dance in Sector 6 here. This will be the first such courses in the region. Mr Pankaj Jain, Managing Director of the NAD, said that the academy would initially conduct one-year diploma courses and would shortly be affiliated with the Cultural Department of Haryana. The institute will have 30 seats in each discipline. top

AMBALA
Gang busted:
The Railway police on Friday busted a gang of six teenaged burglars who were wanted in some burglary cases by the Haryana and the Railway police. The gang operated in Haryana. The police recovered some arms.

FATEHABAD
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Press Club: President — Mr Amir Madan; Vice-President — Mr Mukesh Devgan; General Secretary — Mr Yoginder Sharma; Secretary — Mr Mahesh Sharma; Organising Secretary — Mr Madan Bansal; and Treasurer — Mr Lalit Mehta.

Dharna: The Student Federation of India staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Friday. Ms Alka Mahiya, district President, and Mr Sharma Chand Lali, General Secretary of the federation, demanded an early announcement of the dates for election to students union, withdrawal of fee hike, curb on private schools charging inflated fees, providing staff in all schools of the district and starting of science classes in the local colleges.

KAITHAL
Bail granted:
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Gupta, granted bail to a local journalist, Mr Yogesh Mittal, his brother, Mr Vishnu Mittal, Mr Ishwar Chand petition writer and Mr Neeraj Dhingra here on Friday. They were arrested by the police on Thursday following a complaint lodged by Mr Prem Singh, an auditor with the Haryana Revenue Department.

SIRSA
Artificial limbs:
The local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad has decided to distribute artificial limbs among the poor, Mr Kasturi Lal Chabra, Chairman and Vice-President of the parishad, said here on Saturday that a function in this regard would be organised at Yuvak Sahitya Sadan on Sunday. The state Vice-President, Dr Anil Ahuja, would preside.

Controversy: Dr Rajkumar Bhola, President of the Bahujan Chater Morcha, while addressing a rally at local Hathi Park here on Friday urged the Chief Minister of Haryana to rethink before implementing his proposal of renaming Kurukshetra University. He alleged that Mr Chautala had attacked the history by recommending a change in the name of Kurukshetra University.

Promotion demanded: Mr Rajinder Prasad Bhardwaj, senior Vice-President, and Mr Bagwan Sharma, General Secretary of the Haryana Government Teachers' Sangh, on Saturday demanded promotion for JBT teachers, increase in the vacancies for the posts of clerk and assistant in the office of the block education officer, besides posting primary education officers and Class IV employees in all primary schools in the state.top

BILASPUR
Rally:
Members of the NSUI held a rally on college premises here on Friday and paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birthday. A blood donation camp was also organised in which 25 students donated blood.

DALHOUSIE
Merger demanded:
Residents of Nainikhud, Tunnuhatti and Gurana gram panchayats of Bhattiyat tehsil in Chamba district have demanded the merger of their areas with Dalhousie tehsil. Mr Madan Lal Mahajan, Pradhan of the Nainikhud panchayat said Dalhousie tehsil had been created by bifurcating a segment of Bhattiyat tehsil without giving a proper thought to the merger of these areas.

Backward areas: Residents of Sudli, Mornu, Mail, Drama and Churah panchayats of Dalhousie tehsil in Chamba district are the backward and neglected areas of the district. There is no government senior secondary school, Kakira and primary health centre.

NAHAN
Bus overturns:
Three persons were injured when a bus overturned near Uttari village in Shillai tehsil on Friday. The bus was on its way to Paonta from Shillai. The accident took place when the driver of the bus was negotiating a curve.

SOLAN
Body recovered:
The body of Kunta Devi (45), a widow of Dina Nath of Barad Colony in Salogra, near here was recovered from spot near a vend in Dohri Diwar locality of this town on Friday. The SP, Mr Rakesh Aggarwal, said the deceased had allegedly started living with Dilip, the owner of the vend, for the past six months. Dilip has reportedly absconded. The body has been sent to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination.
