Jail official found dead
AMBALA, Aug 21 — The Deputy Superintendent of Narnaul jail, Mr S.R. Gauri, died here in mysterious circumstances last night. According to the police the body of Mr Gauri was found on the premises of a woman living in Kabadi Bajar, Ambala Cantonment, who brought the body to the Civil Hospital.

Energy park to open shortly
HISAR, Aug 21 — An energy park established at CCS Haryana Agricultural University here will shortly open to the public. Stating this, the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Vinay Kumar, the park being developed at the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology would display all those devices of daily application run on solar energy.

SIRSA, Aug 21 — People from all walks of life, including doctors, advocates and politicians of various political parties, joined the funeral procession of Jagdish Chander, younger brother of Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister, Haryana, at Hautala village, 90 km from here, yesterday.

Jindal, industrialist and Congress nominee from Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency, at Jathlana police station in Yamunanagar district, on a complaint lodged by Mr Bhushan Lal, resident of Jathlana. Mr O.P. Jindal inaugurated his election office at Jathlana yesterday evening.

SONEPAT, Aug 21 — A large number of industrial workers participated in a massive rally organised by the district unit of the CITU in front of a textile mill at Bahalgarh, 10 km from here yesterday in protest against the illegal declaration of a lockout by the management.

430 cases settled at Lok Adalat

PANIPAT, Aug 21 — Mr Justice V.K. Bali of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has called upon lawyers to extend their full cooperation in getting maximum number of cases settled in Lok Adalats. This work could not be done without their support.

Mr Justice V.K. Bali was presiding over the 43rd Lok Adalat here today. He said the Lok Adalat had been organised here specially to decide cases relating to bank loans pending in courts. He had already held a number of meetings with the managers of different banks and they have agreed to give some concessions to the loanees.

The judge opined that no substitute of the Lok Adalats had surfaced so far and there was hardly any possibility in future too. He said that the profession of lawyers was a noble one and they could play a vital role in getting justice to people. He wished the lawyers prosperity.

He stressed upon the loanees to make payments of the loans taken from banks in lump sum or instalments. He also laid emphasis upon making Lok Adalats a grand success.

The District and Sessions Judge, Mr N.S. Ahlawat, said that Lok Adalats were being organised in order to get speedy and inexpensive justice to the poor. He advocated that justice should be provided to the masses on the basis of equality.

The Deputy Commission, Anurag Rastogi, also stressed that besides providing quick and inexpensive justice through compromise, it should also be of a permanent nature so that parties did pursue their cases in high courts.

As many as 430 cases have been settled at the Lok Adalat — 198 criminal, 62 Labour law cases, 48 civil cases, 14 matrimonial cases, 11 rent law cases and 9 bank loan cases. Apart from these, 33 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act were also decided by giving a compensation of Rs 39,13,933.Top


 

Villagers gherao HVPN office

SONEPAT, Aug 21 — Irate residents of Silana village gheraoed the office of the Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam and the power-sub-station at Kharkhauda town 19 km from here yesterday to register their protest against the continuous power crisis and repeated damage of the electricity transformer due to overloading.

According to a report reaching here, groups of people on tractor-trolleys reached the town of Kharkhauda where they gheraoed the HVPN office and the power sub-station.

They shouted slogans against the HVPN and the state government. When the situation started deteriorating, the SDE called the police to control the situation.

The police succeeded in pacifying the irate mob and lifting the gherao of the office.

Residents alleged that the power supply in the village was erratic and whenever transformer was burnt due to overloading the entire village went powerless for days together.

They demanded immediate replacement of the existing transformer with a higher capacity one.

Meanwhile, HVPN has imposed an unannounced two-hour power cut daily by rotation in this city paralysing normal life and business activity. Almost all the essential services like telephone, telegraphs, and hospitals have been hit. However, regular power supply is being maintained for the drinking water supply system.

Government office-and courts in the mini-secretariat and the PWD (B&R) Rest House have been exempted from the routine of power cut.

Enquiries by this correspondent revealed that HVPN had increased the power quota from 19 lakh units a day to 27 lakh units for the Sonepat circle to meet the rising demand. But still the city and its suburbs reeled under power cuts.Top


 

Teenaged robbers nabbed

AMBALA, Aug 21 (UNI) — A gang of teenaged train robbers, operating under the patronage of an inter-state gang was busted with arrest of five of its members by the Haryana Government Railway Police (GRP).

Giving information GRP superintendent A.S. Ahlawat here today said that two of the gang members nabbed belonged to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

These included Bhudev (14) from Mathura and Pravesh of Hapur. Rajesh (13), Annu (16), Raju Khan (13) and Babloo (15) are from district Gurgaon.

He said that the arrests were made following strict surveillance of their movements.

The police recovered looted property and weapons used in the crimes, he said and pointed out that cases of arrest of these criminals could not be registered for about a month in view of the territorial dispute between the concerned district police and the GRP.

He said following a settlement between the two, GRP was granted remand of all these criminals.

The GRP SP however, stated that considering the age of the criminals, the GRP was examining the possibility of sending all the teenaged to the children rescue or reform homes.Top


 

Jail official found dead

AMBALA, Aug 21 — The Deputy Superintendent of Narnaul jail, Mr S.R. Gauri, died here in mysterious circumstances last night. According to the police the body of Mr Gauri was found on the premises of a woman living in Kabadi Bajar, Ambala Cantonment, who brought the body to the Civil Hospital.

Two doctors conducted a post-mortem of the deceased. The cause of the death has not been established so far. His viscera has been sent to Karnal for an examination.

The police is investigating why Mr Gauri went there.

The family members of the deceased who live in Ambala Cantonment suspect foul play. They demanded an inquiry into the matter.Top


 

Energy park to open shortly

HISAR, Aug 21 — An energy park established at CCS Haryana Agricultural University here will shortly open to the public. Stating this, the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Vinay Kumar, the park being developed at the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology would display all those devices of daily application run on solar energy.

He said the purpose behind setting up of this park was to popularise the use of non-conventional energy and motivate the masses to use such devices that might reduce pressure on non-renewable energy sources like coal and oil.

He further said the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy sources had granted of Rs 4 lakh to execute the project.

Devices running on solar energy like solar water heater, solar cooker, photo voltaic (PV) television, PV street light, PV lantern, solar crop drier, PV pump set, family-size biogas plant have already been installed at the energy park. However, a biomass gasifier for generation of electricity was yet to be commissioned, he added.

Mr Vinay Kumar stated that the energy park would help rural families in familiarising with alternate energy resources. The faculty of the college had been holding awareness camps in rural settings, he said.

Dr Yogender Kumar Yadav, Coordinator, Integrated Rural Energy Programme, CCSHAU said, besides giving live demonstration of these devices to the visitors, they would be guided about the places from where these devices could be acquired.Top


 

Devi Lal's son cremated

SIRSA, Aug 21 — People from all walks of life, including doctors, advocates and politicians of various political parties, joined the funeral procession of Jagdish Chander, younger brother of Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister, Haryana, at Hautala village, 90 km from here, yesterday.

Jagdish Chander (48), the youngest son of Mr Devi Lal, was a non-political person and was looking after his agriculture farm. He was suffering from multiple diseases and had been shifted to Apollo Medical Institute, New Delhi, for treatment, four days back, where he died on Thursday.

He is survived by three sons and wife.

The Chief Minister reached his native village after addressing election meetings with Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Vinod Mehta, President, Haryana Union of Journalists, Prof Sampat Singh, Mr Kartar Singh, both Haryana ministers, Mr Ashok Arora Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha, along with some MLAs were also present at the funeral.Top


 

Cong candidate booked

YAMUNANAGAR, Aug 21 — A case has been registered against Mr O.P. Jindal, industrialist and Congress nominee from Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency, at Jathlana police station in Yamunanagar district, on a complaint lodged by Mr Bhushan Lal, resident of Jathlana. Mr O.P. Jindal inaugurated his election office at Jathlana yesterday evening.

Things started when some members in the audience got agitated as a speaker while addressing the gathering made derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee. These persons demanded an apology from the speaker concerned. However, the situation became tense and there was apprehension of a confrontation between Congress supporters and others.

Mr Jindal allegedly manhandled and threatened the Sarpanch of the village, Mr Vijay Kumar. The case has been registered under Sections 232, 506 and 171-F of the IPC.Top


 

CITU threatens to gherao factory

SONEPAT, Aug 21 — A large number of industrial workers participated in a massive rally organised by the district unit of the CITU in front of a textile mill at Bahalgarh, 10 km from here yesterday in protest against the illegal declaration of a lockout by the management.

Addressing the rally, Mr Howa Singh, President of the district unit of the CITU, protested against the action of the management and warned that if the lockout was not lifted immediately, the CITU would have no alternative but to gherao the factory and the management.

Describing the BJP as anti-worker and anti-employee, he alleged that it was responsible for the present state of affairs which had forced the workers and the employees to continue their agitation.

He asked the Chief Minister, Mr Chautala, to clear his government's stand on the issue of lock-outs, lay-offs, retrenchments and the privatisation of power and roadways sectors.

The CITU leaders urged the state government to enforce the Minimum Wages Act and other labour laws strictly and fix Rs 3,500 per month as salary of a worker.

CITU leader announced that the CITU would continue its struggle till all their demands are accepted by the government.Top

The procession started from Bartan Bajar and after passing through Bhaganpuri cloth market, Halu Bajar, Jain Chowk, Bichla Bajar concluded at Ghanta Ghar Chowk in a big public rally.

On way the processionists distributed pamphlets among the people, mostly shopkeepers, supporting Mr Ajay Chautala. They made a passionate appeal to ensure the victory of the NDA candidate for re-electing Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister.Top


 

INLD promises free water, power to farmers

SHAHPUR (Hisar), Aug 21 — The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate from Bhiwani, Mr Ajay Chautala, today claimed that the farmers in Haryana would get water and electricity, free of cost after the elections.

Addressing a series of meetings in various villages here today, Mr Ajay Chautala claimed, the INLD government in Haryana would fulfil all commitments it had made in its election manifesto, but was bound for the time-being by the model code of conduct.

Lashing out at his opponents, Mr Surinder Singh of the HVP and Mr Dharamveer of the Congress, Mr Ajay Chautala said the Congress had "looted the nation during the past 50 years."

Mr Chautala appealed to the people to vote for him and Mr Vajpayee. He pointed out, it was Mr Vajpayee alone who could provide able leadership to the nation. He ridiculed the Congress for handing over the reins of the party to a foreign national and added that they were now trying to handover the entire nation to herTop
