    Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 11 — Shankar Sahney seems to have received the public's nod for a long music career going by the response to his small shows in the city. The beats to light tapping music and simple lyrics emerge to be the trademark of the singer.

A fun-filled visitors dance show to the beats and the voice of the artist at Aerizonna today came a day after the release of his album 'Yaari- Yaari' yesterday. The crowd was introduced to the artist by putting on 'Maasha-Alah', a recorded number from his new release 'Yaari-Yaari'.

Despite the absence of background musicians for live music, the digit pad disc performance did not lack in beauty. The spirited crowd seemed to be lost in bliss in response. 'Kudi kurmuri' and 'Highway te gaddi' evoked instant response. The first one was repeated on public demand.

Despite a crowded dance floor, the singer was able to maintain a distinctive identity. The performance presented a confident artist backed up by years of public shows. A few in the crowd got the opportunity to dance with him.

Sahney was born in a musical family and is a proponent of 'kirana gharana'.The youngest son of a professor of music, he was initiated into the world of music at the tender age of three. The long journey was marked by music shows and music albums. He spent hours doing 'riyaz'.

After finishing school , Sahney studied to become a Chemical Engineer. Love for music, however, pulled him back. During his college days, he spent considerable time in studios as a guitarist involved in over 500 albums. He also figured as an upcoming singer.

He came across an established music star, Jawahar Wattal, and both spent hours creating original tunes. He maintains that his passion for Punjabi music occupies a special place in his heart. "I will not mind to be a playback singer", he said.

Playfulness in tunes and words dominates his show and the rhythm of dance tracks mingling with love songs remains central."Kudi kurmuri' a light number sparkles with youthfulness and vivacity. The beats leave no choice for the crowd but to dance.

'Highway gaddi' proved to be a fun-filled song with 'bhangra' beats at their best. All lyrics in the album have been written by the singer himself except 'kudi kurmuri' by Dev Kohli, 'Highway te gaddi' by Sanjay Raina, and another one by Dev Rishi. The music has been composed, produced and arranged by Wattal. The video has been choreographed by Shiamak Davar of Dil To Pagal Hai" fame.

When questioned if the traditional Punjabi music was suffering because of a strong western element, he said times had changed and so had the demands of music. "There have been few exponents of classical music who could get name, fame and money .The current trend is popular and this does pose a threat to the classical music world," says he.Back
